Using a small satellite dish as an 11 meter antenna

This question should be ask in the CB section where everyone is an expert.
Here, hams don't know anything!

I am all about thinking outside the box and damn the theory-full speed ahead, but I will join the consensus on this one and call BS due to the fact that neither claimant has furnished photographic evidence that the antennas even exist.

BS ;) BS :glare: BS  BS

Pictures don't mean a damn thing. Anyone can stick an antenna on a 2 foot dish and take a picture. It's the performance that counts and no picture will show that. The original question was about using JUST THE DISH ON 11M and not about using a dish as a groundplane or anything else other than the actual RF radiator/parabolic reflector. Study up on parabolic gain versus size and frequency and then tell me a 2 foot dish will have gain on 11m. Hell they don't even have gain on 2m with that size.

Captain K, you are all hung up on theory, I was using a antron 99 on the base, the top section was a fiberglass whip that had been broken in half and I filed the end down and screwed it on the top, never could get the SWRS down below 3 but it talked great, But now I am using a walmart mag mount stuck in the center of a 3 foot snow dish and it rocks!!
I get 6 to 12 Lbs gain with my snow dish over the Antron, you guys can sit here and spout theory all day but until you get a $18 dollar mag mount and stick it on a snow dish you will never learn that book smarts is old school and REAL WORLD testing will blow theory out of the water..EVERYTIME >>>>>.and i just got DOWn!!

I have a small satellite dish, and I have mobile antennas.
Whereas I've never published myself to be either very technical with a schooled grasp of theory, neither have I ever outright turned dowwn the opportunity to try something if it was within my grasp. I even tried the tak-tenna homebrewed and threw it away for lack of performance.
If I get an opportunity I will try to put a mobile antenna on the dish and try it.

Here's the question. Do I do it with the antenna stuck on the bowl of the dish like SW's snow dish (bowl you get in and ride down the snowy hillside), try to figure out a way to mount the bottom to the point in front off the dish the reflection merges (which also doesn't make sense considering antennas radiate from the upper portion primarily), or don't bother at all because no one would believe it even if the Country Preacher published controversial results?

Homer, aka, the Country Preacher will try to accommodate with photos and posted results if:

1. a consensus can be reached on this, and

2. no one decides that me doing this necessarily makes me an idiot just because it is considered quite crazy.

My wife has already told me I'm crazy for the things I do, so I just don't care if it seems dumb to try. Columbus was willing to sail over the edge of the world for Queen, country, and wealth. I'll do it for the fun of it.

Now, any preferences?

now I know what a snow dish is

thanks homer

and I think that alot could be learned from your building one and reviewing it regardless of how it is supposed to turn out, you do a good job of this on the forum and so I vote in favor.:pop:

good luck on the consensus ! LOL

if you'r wife already knows ... ummmm ... i mean thinks you're crazy and you're making antennas anyway .............. why worry about what folks whos face you'll never see think ? ;)

go for it homer , if someone doesn't like it or complains about your results ................ point out how fortunate they are to have nothing better to complain about and ask them to build one and give their results . hehehehe :)

as for preferences im sure Doc' can tell you what color to paint the dish/bowl for best performance . :)

btw i think a base loaded antenna would suck in a RF reflective bowl and that a unloaded or mid/top loaded would have a better chance of working .

i was kidding.
really.....
I was just giving CK a bad time.
Besides snow dishes are made out of Aluminum, or plastic, and i can not find any glue that will keep it held down as I slide down the hill on my as....

... a very soft shading from one color to the next. I like primary colors, my self, start with red and go to the lighter ones. Or spin the thing, a few drops of color in the center 'expand' very nicely.

or paint the @#$ thing pink!
