well damn i feel dumb. i removed my magnet mount and drilled a hole onto roof for the wilson 5000. swr is 3.0 on 40, 2.0 on 1, and below the cb band its crazy flat....1.0.0. do i need to raise, or lower the whip?

you may need the 66 inch whip. I have a 1000 roof mount and that is the way i had to go to get the swr down...

The lower the frequency; the longer the antenna needs to be.

Soooo . . . Since your antenna's SWR is getting lower as you check it on the lower part of the CB band; then I would have to say that it is too long for the upper part of the CB band.

Make sense?

yup. i had a shorter wilson 5000 whip. close i can get it to is 1.2 on 1, and 1.4 on 40.

That will do . . . I would be satisfied with that . . .

Trim a little bit at a time; you can't put it back on.

But I am sure that you know that already.

Once you get below about 1.5:1 the differences in SWR are very minor. Typically not worth the effort of getting any lower. With mobile antennas that are changing their environment all the time (surroundings), there will be variations in that SWR. Move 20 feet, see if it changes, for instance. You might get it to a 'perfect' 1:1 at some point, but move again and it'll change. Really, what you've got is as good as it get's for all practical purposes.

Nice to see someone drilling holes to mount an antenna properly!! Congrats on that and getting it to match.:thumbup1:

Well 123, since you have it working now, how does the hole mount compare to the mag mount or can you tell?

BTW, did you have to change feed lines, and if so describe what you used in both installs.
