Anyone use a dash cam?

Oh for sure the chances of needing one are extremely small however the benefits could be extremely helpful even in a simple case of insurance fraud. I paid some big $$$ for the truck and my oldest son just turnef 16 so the benefits of Big Brothers (Dad) watching are priceless if and when he ever gets the keys. The insurance premium will be sky high just starting out and a watchful eye may keep things in order as well as be a saviour if he was ever in an accident that was not his fault but was made to look like it was because of his age. I have more research to do.

No contest. :D

We had some that had a forward and driver facing cam that one on impact would save 30 seconds before and 39 seconds after and Would alert a location they were neat but very pricey but your insurance would like those. Company policy was if you changed the camaras view you got fired luckily I wasn't a driver lol
 
I have two dash cams one at the front one at the rear, there hooked up via 3g and ran through a DVR at another location 24/7. Did the installs my self just like the ones at home. Pretty easy to install.

they run from an app on your phone? ie you turn on and off on your phone, but the recording is done at another location?

that sounds very nice if so

DNS through a little 3g Verizon device. DVR is on the desktop with battery backup. I installed them for security at locations and accidents. Sure I can access them from my android device as well

They all do. That's part of the point. Most also record GPS data and speed. They start when the vehicle is started and end when you shut the key off or after s preprogrammed delay. The more I think about it the more I think I will get one. I just have to decide what to get.

It's worth it.
 
Some of the storm chasers i know use a regular cam as a dash cam. Those specialized dash cam units my suffer from blindness ('ineptness') at night. Most viddy cams have that problem. Only the best don't. $$$. Perhaps next year they will make a reasonably-priced cam with decent night use. That is still the entire reason I haven't bought a viddy cam yet.

A few of the really cheap Chinese cams are pretty blind at night but the decent units see fine. They are made to handle low lux conditions and have the advantage of having the headlights illuminate the area in front whereas a normal video cam is designed to be used in well lit situations with proper lighting anyway. Even the rear backup camera on my truck sees fairly well at night with just the reverse lights on.
 
I would think it is Indeed worth while to get/have a dash cam..
There are many ways it could help..

That vid earlier was Nuts .. !!

I also keep a Pen and watch cams..That i can quickly activate
(like at a traffic stop) and it cam in very good on two occasions.

Make sure to get a good priced cam and install IR spots in the grill and bumpers like i did.

No thanks. Straight decent camera with no IR add-ons is all that is required.I don't plan on driving at night without my headlights on. :laugh: Besides most IR stuff has very limited range due to poor intensity. Visible light and a low lux camera is the way to go. I don't drive much at night anyway except a bit in the winter when it gets dark before I get home from work which is in town which is well lit anyway.

Mercedes has cars that come with IR night cameras now. The tachometer or speedometer change to a view of the road ahead. Funny part is, the night vision won't work if you turn the headlights off. It says night vision not available with headlights off.

Yup. Grandparents have one. It's Gotti.

My dash cams work fine with or without the IR enabled at night. But i do a lot of night driving. So my advice stay away from knock off brand cams. Go pro cams are awesome
