uniden 980 antenna connector

I Was fixing a new connector on my coax from the radio and before
I solder it together, i check for continuity/short. Well it had continuity. took it back apart, nothing was wrong, put it back together, still had continuity. Took coax off the radio, coax was Good. decided to check the radio connector and the antenna connector has continuity from center pin to shield and radio chassis! what gives anyone else ever noticed this?

Uniden won't give me any information. anyone have a 980 and will check to see if there's continuity between the center pin of antenna connector And a radio ground? maybe undo the coax at the antenna or amplifier and check for continuity. this radio is a little different this is the only reason I'm asking

That's normal. You should not be testing continuity of your coax while it's attached to a radio.

Hook it up, check SWR and start talking.

I have six other radios, not one of them has any continuity between the center pin and the radio chassis. I'm only asking because when the coax connector tightens/bottoms out, it stops receiving. Swr is 1.2 across all 40 according to MFJ analyzer. Oh well thank anyway.

Maybe try a UHF connector with a shorter sleeve.

Do you have an antenna hooked up to your tuner/radio? I usually get some receive static just by pushing the center pin of the PL-259 into the radio jack and then the noise stops when it bottoms out providing there isn't an antenna hooked up to the other end. Check your connectors again. They act up when something ain't right. I need to put some quality connectors on my jumpers instead of the crappy ones on them now.

What is a short at DC isn't necessarily a short for AC/RF.

Here's an example of a 4:1 Balun. As you can see it appears as a dead short however that is only at DC.

Some radios you'll get a short from center pin to shield and you will on a lot of antennas with matching circuits and DC grounding circuits.

Between the vertical board and the antenna connector, a wire runs down from the center to the board. 4 tiny resistors in a group. The one just beside the (d500)opposite the direction of the arrow. i think. That resistor looks diff/melted. I think it says TX on the top. you have a good close up pic?

No I don't and I don't own a 980. I pulled the pic off of a website. There are others on this forum that could guide you through this. I was just curious as to what was going. I'm still learning about radios myself.

i never had that problem with my bear cat but i did change the wire on it to solid copper one is the wire loose inside or look like a cold solder joint is the connecter tight on the radio its self only thing other then that is you have a bad pl259 plug then again it could be a bad so239 on the radio its self hate to hear your having problem hang in there mess around you'll find it eventually
