Use the pa function and plug an external speaker into it. It can give you a rough indication of how loud you are and how you sound.

Holy Cow! Would never have thought of that.

Am guessing I can also use it to adjust the tone setting on my CR577 when it arrives.

Thanks, 222!

No worries man. It works, not a real talkback, but at least you can see what you sound like and how loud it really is. I do it with my PC122xl, used it to check my 2018 extreme mic. You will be happy with the cr-577. They are good mic's, I love my 2018 extreme. Anyway glad to have helped and hope you get everything situated. God bless.

That's good news! I'll get everything lined out one of these days. Used to know a lot of this stuff back in the 70s but forgot a lot.

Thanks again.

From everything I have read the the CR-577 is a good mic if you can't find a Astatic 575-m6 anywhere. Checking Ebay I see the 575 are holding their value, have two of them maybe I will put them up for sale.

The 575's are going for crazy money these days, wish I still had mine. Great mic's as well.

I would adjust the pot, or have a pro tune up your radio. Probably won't even need a power mic once it's tuned right. If you stick a power mic on it, and the modulation pot is halfway open, you're just trying to shove more through it and it will probably just squeal.

Should have listened to you, 307!

Ordered a CR577 for my Royce and my wife ran in a while ago wanting to know who let the pigs out. The highest I can turn the audio setting on it is 2 or Squeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeal! Anything past that and it's Ned Beatty in Deliverance all over again!

At that setting the swing and peak wattage on my Radio Shack SWR/Power meter is exactly the same as my stock mic.

Let's see . . . Can't use a power mic because the neighbors will think I'm mistreating my wife. Or dog. Can't get a small, inexpensive amp because my 4 watt dead key will send it packing. Can't get a bigger amp that can handle my 4 watt dead key because then I have to buy a new, larger power supply.
Can't talk on SSB cause I don't have it.

Think I'll chunk everything and order a new radio. However, looks like Galaxy is making the only base station these days and I can't get excited about the looks of it. Or the price. Guess I could get a peaked and tuned Galaxy 979 with variable power control and SSB. But don't know if it will work with my 11 amp power supply. And lots of folks in the forums say the Galaxy's suffer from SSB drift. And that the new Cobras are made by eight-year-olds in a third or fourth world country making $0.27 an hour so their quaility has dropped drastically from what it used to be. And the Unidens are basically the Cobra with a different name on them. And the . . .

I remember this CB stuff being a whole lot more fun forty years ago.

P.S you could always send it to DTB Radio for basic tune which includes an alignment. You can tell him what percentage modulation to set it. You could maybe ask him if he can match up your CR577 to it. Then you'll you'll have a radio that's purring and you won't have to spend money buying another radio that's perhaps untuned.
All Galaxy radios come detuned from the factory. Some badly. If you decide to buy a Galaxy base station, buy it from someone like DTB and have him tune and align it before he ships it to you. Otherwise you just have the same problems.

How did you know it squeals? With a PA speaker plugged in?
Do you have the mic wired for a Royce?

It's loud. No PA speaker.

There are a couple of 619 wiring diagrams floating around. One has only the shield going to Pin #2 and one has the shield and the common ground going to Pin #2. I put both on #2 per this diagram from Walcott CB.

https://www.walcottcb.com/microphone_wiring.php

Here's the other one:

Pin #1 ~ Audio
Pin #2 ~ Shield
Pin #3 ~ TX/Transmit
Pin #4 ~ RX/Receive

Is it worth a try to disconnect the common ground from #2 leaving only the shield?
