Has anyone ever had the chance to test a silver salute side by side with a d104? Better yet anyone ever compare it with the 104 on a scope? How do thay stack up?

THANK'S

I'm not surprised. I thought that would be the answer. D104's have to be the best Mic's ever made. Turner +2's are also excellent. Since I've been back in the hobby I've seen a few of these silver salutes on eBay. Theses just something cheap looking about them.

Far from it but they are good if you are running AM. As for the topic of this post I will agree that the SS is one damn ugly microphone. Of course the 104 is a patented design so they had to do something to make it look close but different.

I knew a local that had the Silver Salute and a D104. Not that the Silver Salute sounded bad, but the D104 always sounded better. He would try to get the SS to drive his rig as well as the D104, and always ended up sounding pinched and overdriven. Inexpensive D104's are still out there... I'd look for one of them before I dropped the coin on a Silver Salute.

I have been lucky enough to pick up a few inexpensive "mint" D-104's on eBay.

I still have the one I got for my 13th birthday, and it works great. Pretty good testament to the quality of mics Astatic used to make. And don't overlook the ugly ones... the bases can be painted easily and the rest polished up pretty good.
