Cobra 148GTL and President HR2510 better

Well I have recently bought a 2510 from a local that needed money fast and he was selling his President HR2510 for $75.00 and I quickly got over there and bought it because it already had the 11 meter conversion as I have no license. What I was surprised to find out was that it was better than my RCI built 148GTL I got a few years ago still in the box "lucky find". When I say better it is based only on user performance. The receive is a little better, Modulation I believe is the same but the local stations say it's better..Clean loud but so is the 148 no matter what they say lol. Really surprised me is the NB is better also. My beautiful 148 is not going anywhere soon but the 2510 is now sitting in it's place. I have a vfo with 6 digit read out external meter bolted to the under side of the 148 that will soon be operational but now I don't know what to do with it as my new Galaxy 959DX has been modded to the max last week and is ready for pick up and is going into one of my two trucks. My Tacoma which gets put away in the winter so it doesn't rust with the road salt here. My Dodge 4X4 gets put away in the Spring "just sits in the drive way out of the way" I never thought I would ever replace my 148 especially with all the channels I will soon have.

the receive on the 2510 is one of the best around.
you will find many posts about how good it is.

it may be a bit better than the 148 as far as quietness goes, but ive never really been able to tell a difference.

now, as for transmit modulation?
no way is the 2510 even in the same ballpark as the 148.

the 2510 is low level modulated, which means that no matter what you try to do to it, it will never be "loud" on AM.

if people are saying that the 2510 is just as loud on AM as the 148, then i would be asking whats wrong with the 148.

on SSB they are both excellent.

yes the 2510 is low level modulation . but on ssb these will out talk any 148 any day.
id take 1 of these over any standard cb.
hammer if ya live where it gets cold DO NOT use 2510 in the cold. id use the 148
or galaxy for mobile use.

I feel the same way about the modulation. It's funny but some people actually say stuff that is wrong because of jealousy. I know my 148 audio was plain smoken "several mods to the audio section" ..so it's possible to get me on another radio so I am in the same class as them. I find this hard to believe myself that grown men can act like this?

This HR2510 has never been mobile. I have heard the same thing about not using them as mobile radio's. That's fine all my bases are mobile's. This radio has been modded like the 11 meters and some other things and it was said that it has had mods done to the audio section. I know people would like an unmolested radio but for me they did me a favor because I would have wanted this done and finding good tech's is hard to find around here and it saved me $$

I didn't find them anything outstanding. I tested one with a Marconi 2955 Radio Communications Test set and SINAD meter readings at -120dBm were no better than some of the 40 channel UK CBs I've tested, even the entry level ones. Once you got down to around -124/-125dBm the 1kHz tone from the sig gen was inaudible. I was actually surprised at how quickly it dropped off. An Amstrad 901 UK FM radio managed to still be audible at -128dBm.

So no idea where this claim comes from but it certainly doesn't measure up on the bench.

hre in the u.s they are high sought after. and a older ham told me that these were great
[export] radios. and if i wanted better id need to move up too a icom ,kenwood, ect.
id trade any export radio for the 2510

The trouble is that very few people bother to put them on RF signal generators and do a proper test. Instead their view of how well something does or doesn't work is based purely on their perception. There used to be a 40ch CB here in the UK called a Maxcom 4E. People thought it was deaf but it wasn't. The problem was that it had a very stingy S meter so it would say see a signal that was S9 on other radios anywhere from S5 to S9. There was no adjustment on the board for the signal meter so you were stuck with what it read but put one on a RF sig gen and it heard just as well as every other CB.

With a few simple mods the Kenwood ts 440 will have some outstanding audio
on both am/ssb

Now after a week with my 2510 and the newness has worn off I find myself back on the 148 and I plan on getting the radio guy to wire up the vfo. I do believe the 2510 shines on SSB and my 148 clarifier is locked making talking to 3 or more a little difficult but this to will be fixed. So for me I am having a hard time from one to another but I'm slowly finding myself going back to the 148 and after the mods are done to it it will be hard to shelf it.
