Any counterpoise should be 1/4 wavelength long at your operating frequency thus on 40m it should be about 33 feet long. Scale from there for other bands.

Planning to get something like this case and put radio, tuner, power source in. Might be able to fit a coil of magnetic wire in too. Besides I'm probably not going to wander too far from the vehicle.
