Can someone tell me the fair market value of an Al 84?
It's been upgraded: caps, ceramic anoid caps, 10 metro mod ECT ECT.
Id like to begin using the ft 950 I bought about 9 months ago.
The ft 950 has been sitting in it's boxes since I purchased it.
It has been mars modified and will be used only on 11 meters SSB. I wanted to purchase a true HF amp without breaking the bank.
I do understand that the Al 84 isn't the most advanced amp, dated and will most likely do under 500 on 11 meters. But from my research it's a nice little amplifier, and perfect for my needs.
It's band selector stops at 15.
No axillary position.
I know other use them on 11 but don't quite understand how the modification was done and where the band selector switch is placed when used on "10" meters.
I'm sure there's a few of you that own or have owned this little gem.
Can you please explain this band switch contradiction? As I mentioned I've owned a Yaesu ft-950 for almost 9 months without ever taking it out of the box. I was and I'm content with my Uniden Madison and was waiting until I found a good cheap HF amplifier to go with the transceiver. I wasn't about to use the only amp I own that is capable of High Drive with an ft-950 (Palomar 300a lol)
I'm sure most of you would agree that's a good idea. Thanks. 73

Before you get too enthused, you might check the price, and availability, of the tubes. As for price, I think something from $200 - $300 would be fair, sort of. I'm a fan of Ameritron amplifiers, but not 30 year old ones, especially if they've been modified. Sorry.

I get where you're coming from.
30 years old isn't that bad considering what I'm currently using. Both of the amps are older than 30 years old. After refurbishing they were their purpose. I would never concider using them anywhere but the band for which they were built and intended for.. I've got nine backup 6lq6's that are intended for my Phantom (if and when needed.) So replacing the tubes if needed won't be a problem. As far as the mods go it looks to be done to a very high standard, and many HF amps have been modified for 10 meters. Without that modification most of us would've never heard the many excellent amps built during the hay day of ham radio. The amp itself looks externally and internally nice and clean. Very well kept and cared for. I know from experience that amps of that age can be problematic. But it is what it is. It's the first time I will be using an HF transceiver and amplifier. I thought I would go with something that from my online research shows to be a fairly good/clean running amp. If I can get it for $300 or less I'm going to scoop it up. Thanks for your advice. I actually wasn't thinking about Tube replacement while writing the op (so thanks.) If I didn't have those back up tubes I probably wouldn't be interested. Much appreciated for the reply and advise. 73 PS. Pics of the amp itself.
