I currently have a Galaxy 2517 running to an A-99 about 20 feet up for my base station. I manage my SWR currently with an Astatic PDC2 SWR meter. I was wondering if an upgrade in tuner would be beneficial. I was thinking about the MFJ-949E found here:

I just wanted to know if running a better tuner would help me out performance wise and if anyone has any knowledge of this tuner. Seems to have some good features. I do run a TNT 150 kicker at times.

Welcome to the Forum!

What W9CLL posted is correct.

The main reason why we Hams use tuners is because many of us run multi-band wire antenna or other types of multi-band antennas and many of these have some bands where the SWR maybe high so the tuner lets us work those bands even though the SWR is higher than what we want. We would all love to have a single antenna give us the best tuning and highest gain for all the 10 HF bands but that antenna doesn't exist yet. A tuner can make our radio's think we have one.

With a mono band antenna, if your tuning isn't ideal, then you should takes steps to correct it rather than band-aid fix it with a tuner because underneath the band-aid, the problem still lies.

Thank you for insight and explaination

If you need need a tuner with an a99 on the 11 meter band there is something seriously wrong. Those antennas should have a very low swr well above and below the CB frequencies. If it doesn't I'd spend the money on a new antenna and coax.
