small or "mini" beams?

Time for the umbrellas. :ROFLMAO:
Pay no attention to the parade rainers, rangelia. I'm willing to bet they have no personal experience with the antenna themselves.
A lot of people have reported success with these and they are not all stupid, crazy liars as some would have you believe.
If you want to build one, have at it. And be sure to let us know how it goes. (y)

I read that Elvis is still alive.
Seriously, primary school knowledge of physics is enough to discard that from buying.
Mike

Mike, I agree about not buying one. They are expensive.
But, for someone who enjoys experimenting and making their own, it should be really cheap and a fun project.
As far as physics go, it is simply a squashed spiral dipole. But mounted in the clear, should work to some extent. Some people claim it does so very well.

And El, as he prefers to be called these days, says hi. ;)

From what I have read, its "reviews" go both ways. It seems like its a easy and inexpensive project but Im kinda looking for a "tried and true" set up. I lean twards trusting forums more than anything so if no one has any positive experiences with something like this I'll maybe put it on the back burner as a camp antenna or something. Does seem like a cool project though for someone who may want to get out a little further.

I know Im askin a lot here so let me tell yall where the antenna has to go. Has to go. About 18" from my shop I have a 4x4x12 buried 2' in the ground with about 80 or 100lbs of concrete in it. Cant remember. I can add onto it for bracing or what not but it has to go there. We may be selling soon and wife don't want a "structure" in the yard. I can understand because when the time comes I will build a structure. There is a line of mature pines on one side (Im in S Ga.) and the rest is a typical neighbor hood. I am comfortable with making it higher and fabing something to make it spin if need be. Hope that cuts down on wasting yalls time. I appreciate the help so far.

I think others will agree with Brett's Moxon suggestion.
Not quite the gain of a beam, but great front-to-back rejection.
Can also be made with pvc and wire. Lots of plans online.
Maybe someone will chime in with an alternative.
Good luck with whatever you choose!

Was going to remind you the fly in the ointment is that the Moxon will be great for DX but not very good for local as it is horizontal. But you likely know that; that's why you were interested in a quad.

I'm sometimes a little slow on the uptake as you can see.:D

I haven't got to the horizontal or vertical thing yet, but after looking at the moxon im kinda leaning towards it. What can the elements be made of? By the calculator, Im going to have a 13' driven element. Can these be made out of conduit or something, or do you gotta take the coax all the way to the ends (if ya get what Im saying)? Also, I put 27.205 MHz as my frequency. does that sound right?

Yes, 27.2 sounds right. As far as materials, you can use aluminum or copper or copper wire with pvc as the framework.
I believe HomerBB once made one out of a couple of old lawn chairs. That's the extent of my moxon knowledge so I'll back out and make way for those who really know. Hopefully someone will chime in and help you. (y)
