I was recently looking at mobile linears for a CB on Ebay and saw a RM Italy brand. It's only a 100watt but was rather inexpensive. Has anyone heard of these? Are they any good?

inexpensive amps...good starter box's...not real expencive, so if you blow it up, your not out much...you can pick up a KL 203 for around $50-60... pretty basic..ON/OFF button and a AM/SSB delay button...The KL 203P is the same as the 203, only it also has a pre-amp button...Usually you can fine both box's running about the same price.

Think they do around 100w's on AM, and 150-200 on SSB.

But like PA770 said, you'll need a low DK...1-1.5w's and not much swing...basic cb that hasn't been all tweaked out.

"IF" you blow it up...throw it away! It would cost more to fix than it did to buy new.

Whatever you do, do not buy the "P" model. The RMI fets can be replaced with some commercially available parts.
The P models are not selective and amplify all noise and signals that hit the antenna and when the P section fails it can keep the transmit function of the linear from working properly.

Thanks for the info. I think I might just give one a try, like it was said, If it blows out, I'm not out much

Hmm Looked again at them and the model is KL203P.. Is this the infamous P model Tall man was talking about? BTW, I'm not worried about over-driving the amp and blowing it out since I plan to hook it up to a stock, out of the box, Bearcat 980SSB.

KL203P is just the preamp version. the KL203 does not have the preamp. I have one of each and they work just fine. if you get one you see what is meant about the preamp overloading the radio with noise. if you have a 1 noise level and turn on the preamp you will now have a 7 or 8 noise level. the preamp does not bring a weak signal person in over the white noise. and static.

Dave, glad you mentioned that. I forgot when I replied earlier.
the radio should be turned down to 1 1/2 to 2 watts dead key to keep from popping the finals. in it.

I really like these amps. I haven't had any fail. I treat them gently. I have an HLA-150 that sees almost daily use. It's pushing 4 years old and works great. I have it doing about 90 watts. It'll do more, but that's all I push it. I've had several of the 203's. Never blown any of them.

I have a box full of KL203's that were over driven.(They were sent to me for repair) One was hit with about 50 watts input. It blew all of the potting material off of the fets. Every single fet smoked.
It only takes 1.5 to 2.0 Watts to drive these amps. Too much swing will roast it too.

I have worked several thousand amplifiers from RM Italy. I was under contract by the one and only US distributor.
In almost every case those amps sounded better than some of the high power and high dollar amps. They sound good and will work just fine as long as you do not overdrive them.
