Super-Tech Super Mods?

I had one of Dustins competition cobra 29s. It was impressive on the watt meter but made the transformers in the amplifiers talk and would bleed on the stereo.

Even turned down to the same power level as my 29 it was just dirty. The radio had some kind of mosfet in it. It would key 12 watts, swing to 15 average and 50 pep. Naturally a lot of guys loved them.

Well if you watch that video, he hacked that 955 all to hades and back. It did less power than it did out the box, maybe there was a reason? I need to turn this radio down, let me rip out half the parts in the back, that should do it.

I didn’t expect to see Mike working on one of those radios but for me, it’s a nice change from the stuff he usually does.

I didn't really watch it. Mikes voice and laugh is like nails on a chalk board transmitted on ssb. It is good to see him working on something modern. I don't think some of the old radios he works on are worth the time spent to fix them.

Well, I can tell you I get more of the old radios here and I mean a bunch of them and people send them and pretty much include a blank check it's not if I or You or anyone else thinks its worth it, It is if the customer thinks it is! Just the nature of the business anymore. I think the mistake some make is trying to talk a customer out doing what a customer wants. My only job is to explain what could happen with radios of a vintage nature I don't waste my time trying to talk them out of what they want, I just don't. They are more than capable of deciding for themselves if they want to take the chance that a vintage radio will not give them more issues down the line I give the information they need to make that decision I don't make it for them.

I’m glad to see some modern stuff too and I also question if the older stuff is worth fooling with. But as Old Tech said, it’s what the customer wants. Not to say the old stuff isn’t any good, in some cases I think it’s probably better but my preference is some of the newer stuff. Mikes voice doesn’t bother me but the attitude towards some things bothers me sometimes.

I agree. I get asked a lot what I would do or what I like, I try to load my answer equally so I’m not the influence on their decision. And I get asked a lot what’s the best radio, that’s up to you because what’s the best to me probably isn’t the best to you.

The boldness hurts my eyes but I do see your point. I'm not cut out for the cb business. I used to take on some local work but guys just started bringing over junk that the local cb shop wouldn't touch. The last straw was a golden eagle 1k that belonged in the dumpster. It has designed for 27lf6 tubes and no one in town could figure out why the 20lf6's kept failing. The hot filament voltage really made it swing but after several hours a tube would take a dump.

I told the guy to sell it, but he bought new tubes and talked me into overhauling it. I told him in the beginning what kind of power he could expect and suggested a pair of 3-500z tubes or a gs35b but he wanted the golden eagle. Then he was disappointed because the wattage was lower with the 20lf6's running the right filament voltage and never used the thing.

I will still fix stuff for certain people but I told the rest that I don't work on anything that 1 man can carry and no sweep tubes unless were shooting them with a bb gun. Business has been slow.

It's probably a combination of his attitude and laughing at his own jokes.

Been there a few times, getting what others can’t fix or refuse to work on, it is a PITA and will tick you off.

If you read the R&R website they tell you we CLIP and PEAK each radio unless the customer tells them not to....

Well I did not read that and did not know that. Wow! You just openly tell that crap to your customers?? Amazing.

I tell mine right off the bat, if it’s been clipped and all that crap, I take it out and put limiters back.

Being retired from the repair business for years, I have 4 main biased reasons that I like older radios. None of them are about money or performance issues anymore. After my radios are completely restored, most duplicate radios will be given away to friends. Probably all of them someday if I fall ill.

1: I'm more familiar with many of them having worked on a countless number of the same models for years
2: Schematic and service manual availability
3: They bring back fond memories. (nostalgic value)
4: Doing my part with recycling, rather than having those radios leaching somewhere in a landfill
