Galaxy DX959

I would like to thank you guys for all the help and info you have given me.
I want to get back into the hobby but I also want to make better choices
about the equipment I buy.I want to read more on this site and study
about the hobby as a whole.

Thanks guys.I really do appreciate all the info.

I’m not saying there’s no gain by doing the modification but the gain is minimal in my opinion for the amount of work and money involved. I’ve done it a few times and the results weren’t real impressive. Now put an RFX95 or similar on it and you’d be much more pleased.

Or put a compete amp behind it and you’d be able to switch that on/off at will and possibly even have a receiver preamp. That’s questionable and will open a debate as to just how useful and effective the preamp really is but it’s an option.

Thanks TheRealPorkchop.
I think I should start out with just a radio and then get into the other thing later own.I need to read more and study more be for I even buy the radiol

depending on what your looking fpr you could buy a dual final radio like a galaxy 99v2 .or just buy a galaxy 959 and small amp for it. if ya dont want ssb you can save some cash and buy a galaxy 929 or cobra 29 and buy a small amp for that. BUT the best thing you can do is buy a good mobile antenna to start with. like wilson 1000 sirio 5000 , predator 10k , skipshooter .. these are all a differentt variety of antenns that work well for different appications ..hope this helps

My personal opinion and that from a few people that I have talked to is that the 959 is a good sounding radio for the money and for some reason they seem to have less drift on SSB than there ten meter big brothers. They definitely come out of the box a real dog and can use a good tune for optimal performance. They have a frequency counter and a lot of bells and whistles going for them. Definitely a decent choice I believe.

I was looking at the galaxy 99v2 and the president lincoln 2 plus v3.

As for the antenna I think i still have my 6 foot skipshooter.

I'm going to keep reading and studying on my options.

Thanks again for your input.

But I was wanting to get into ham radio and would like to get my license.

Thanks for your help and input.

I like the 959. I own a 979.

These days I’d rather have a 980 Uniden + RM Italy KL203. With a West Mountain Radio ClearSpeaker. Hear, and get heard.

Slowmover the 959 is a cool unite and i like the looks of the galaxy 99v2.

I'm going to check out that West Mountain Radio ClearSpeaker.

Thanks for your help.

I hate to confuse things BUT, If you are thinking of getting into ham radio. I would leave all the Galaxys , Stryker and that type of radio out of the picture. Very hard to use for 10 meter. They are only really CB radios. Possibly the lincoln or 2950. can work.

I agree. And should have stated that for mobile AM/SSB that the 980 Uniden plus KL203 & DSP Speaker would be a great start.

10-meter, the above post is the way to go.

Good radio. Do NOT do any of the moron mods to it. All the 959 needs is set the driver and final bias to 4.20v (mine was factory biased at 4.20v). Do a service manual alignment. 4w dead key, peak the amp stages in order. Then set mod limiter to 100% on a scope. This radio will sound like a great base station if you do these steps. No snip and clip crap needed!

Go for your general ticket at least.
For just a little more money you could purchase a real ham radio. Like a 746 pro or a yaesu ft857 or a kenwood 440 or better.

One of the accidentally best mobile radios I know is with a 959 installed in a friends large car.

Accidental as it was a last minute swap with another driver.
