Radio EQ and or Processor

Just wondering what you guys prefer to run. Most radios today have both . I'm still trying to get some of the Parametric EQing down pat. I've looked at Bob Heil's ideas on his website, some have worked out for me. Just wondering if you run just the Mic EQ with the Processor off. What do you folks prefer ?

It depends on the equipment you have and your goals. How much audio bandwidth does your transmitter have?

I run an external audio chain. Mic preamp, compressor, 31 band eq and a peak limiter at the end if the chain. What you need is going to depend on what the transmitter is capable of and what you're trying to achieve.

There's no sense in having a rack full of gear if the transmitter will only pass narrow banded audio. If you have a rig that will pass below 200 to 300 hz an eq will help you get the mud out. Then you can boost some in the 3000 to 4000 hz area and add some brightness. With some transmitters you'll want to cut everything past a certain point so you don't hog up too much bandwidth.

The rigs that have built in eq are usually more than adequate. Plug a good mic into it and enjoy. The only reason I use the external chain on my anan is because I spent a lot of time setting it up for other transmitters and didn't want to start over.

The most important thing is to have a dummy load and a way to monitor your audio. It's bad form to make adjustments on the air. If you do, you'll make more enemies than friends. I'll bet w9cll knows what im talking about. :)

Ok so I have the yaesu 5000, it of course has the built in 3 stage parametric eq for both the mic eq and then with the processor on. I do have a shure beta 57a going in to it, I'm trying to get familiar with adjusting the parametric side of things. I do have a deep voice, and with it stock , everyone does say it sound really good. I'm trying to get a better sound but confused on which direction to go . Maybe I should just leave it alone and keep it factory.

At one point in time I ran an external eq/compressor. This was when I used a yaesu ft1000. When I bought the Icom ic-7300 I got rid of the external eq and just use the rigs internal bass treble controls with a little compression. I tried half a dozen mics too but came back to the stock hand mic.

Nice rig. I wouldn't even attempt to modify it. As extreme as I would go is piping external audio gear into the data port thru an isolation transformer. Unless you spend a ton on rack gear the improvement is marginal. The mixing board with the crummy 3 band eq would be a downgrade IMO.

You can open up the bandwidth on a lot of yaesu rigs without modifications. Once done it will add the TTBF option to your bandwidth setting in the menu.

Since you were looking at the heil website I thought I would mention my experience when I tried a pr40 and my ftdx1200. Works fine on ssb as long as the processor is on but the rig doesn't have enough preamp to reach 100% modulation on AM. Probably apples and oranges but just FYI.

I just did the TTBF thingy, found this site, www.k6jrf.com. Look at the settings and see if those are in the ballpark. I took AE7JG settings with the processor off just to play around with. Not a lot of sites discuss Parametric eq, more on the external rack gear. I might have found something to play around with.

I think that would be a good place to start. Looks like he cut the 100hz region to keep it from being too boomy or muddy. Then cut some in the 700hz reigon and then boosted at 3000hz. A lot of time can be spent adjusting an eq and the more gear you have the longer it all takes.

All you're doing with a parametric eq is picking a center frequency to attenuate or boost. If you pick 100hz you are adjusting 100hz, a bit above and below 100hz. It's not as precise as a 31 band graphic eq but usually good enough. Some reading on audio forums about parametric vs graphic eq will probably give you a better lesson than I can.
