Freebanding for Beginners

On another note, here is something else to keep in mind; 27.195 usb (between 19 & 20) is use by many stations from central Asia, one being Kirgyzstan (309 division). Also 27.190 is used for FM over there.
I know this to be true because I worked two stations from there a few years back.

Ch. 40 usb is a big ch. in 79 division, have talked to a few guys on that one over the years. They do how ever talk in their native language, so don't give up, just keep yelling and some one will soon answer you in English.

For you guys on the east coast and probably central USA, try keeping your radio on after the dark hours and if you have a beam point it up over the N. Pole. Usually 1 1/2 - 2 hrs after dark on 27.555 usb you might hear station from the other side coming in with the gray line.

In Feb. I will listen usually from 7:00pm - 8:00pm on 27.555 usb, I have worked Reunion Is. twice (173) , Mauritius (168), 2 stations in Russia (50) and two stations in Kirgyzstan (309)
This all happens of course when we are at the peak of the cycle and for me here, it is in the month of Feb.

Feb and March of this year is when I had evening propagation to the Pacific from the East Coast.

It would almost always be after dark, seemingly centered around midnight UTC. The window was very narrow...silence, then steady, and then gone for good after a few minutes. This always seemed to be after South America had come and gone for the day. Took a bit of discipline to listen and call when the band seemed totally dead.

A freq I saw many spots on is 27420LSB. Outside my normal range. Took some brain reprogramming to listen there. Seems to me, anyway, that several in 43 and 172 Divs were using that freq.

I'm fairly sure I missed some contacts being slow to figure that out.

27.490 usb - There is a lady (Slyvia) from Corsica Is. (104) that uses this one for most of her calling to the US & Pacific area. Also a guy from the Marianas Islands (133) works on this one a lot - his name is Flow. Also a few from the Philippines will show up there from time to time.

But, will they still be there this coming cycle? Lets hope.

The problem you’re experiencing is one of frequency adjustment.

Need to re-calibrate the Beer-O-Meter such that the desire to nap falls outside the UTC-midnight window.

Wives are VERY good in this calibration process.
Don’t hesitate to ask their help.

You know me too well. And you’re right...the Mrs has her calibration down pat.

That's an FM business band itinerant frequency in the US.
