Because having a clarifier adjust both RX and TX is dumb. You only want it to adjust RX only. Think about it, what happens if it does both?

The odds of running into more than one person with a locked clarifier are close to none in my area (has been for decades). Once in awhile, when DX is rolling, I'll catch a station enough off center frequency to be considered locked (along with the many attempts by other stations to get him centered) but once again, it's very rare (in my experience) :whistle:
 
Okay I've had my fun now to be serious. Having a clarifier adjust both RX and TX is dumb? Fixing the TX on a class D part 95 radio I'm sure had some rational reason at the time but it was the Federal Clown Commission so who knows. Fixed TX and variable RX fine tuning works great , as you say , between TWO stations. Add a THIRD station with yet a different TX frequency and it all goes to krap. Add a fourth and ....

This is one of the pitfalls of channelized operation with fixed TX and Receive Incremental Tuning.

(y) Kop, you're so right. They screwed up big on having clarifiers locked on transmit. As you know, when the first SSB rigs came out many of the clarifiers tracked receive and transmit. It wasn't a lot of wiggle room but enough for everyone to be aligned with each other for a group discussion, and I was happy with that. Then they were locked up. Sure, folks like to push the envelope by getting the most wiggle possible, but I think there wouldn't have been such a big push (getting un-locked) by most SSBer's, for most of us, if they had left them the way they were. Of course, maybe I'm whistling the wrong tune.... :whistle:
 
Maybe someone has a non converted rig then can try it with and sees if it stays locked. Or temporarily lift one leg of the resistor and try and post results. ?

While troubleshooting my other II+ I lifted the leg to see if that would effect the two menu options with ERR codes but it didn't. Being lazy by nature I left it like that while I pondered another step... I just went over and checked it (with one leg up) [not me - the radio] and got the same clarifier results.
 
My first foray in SSB was with drifty exports and I chased the clarifier (unlocked) around constantly. Still, I had difficulty dialing anyone in, and was constantly told I was off freq. A firm detent at 12 o’clock that was always in the wrong spot made it even worse. A PITA, at least I thought.

With the Lincoln (or all newer radios I’ve tried), I rarely even touch the clarifier. Spoiled rotten now, I guess.

I’m sure there’s something to be said for QSOs involving multiple parties, but haven’t run into any issues yet. Then again, I have only one local and am usually just DXing. On the occasions I’ve talked to groups of individuals that were local to each other...still didn’t seem to have any issue.

I guess only time will tell if my thoughts on this change..but for now all I can say is that it’s strange to me that any menu setting would default with power cycling. That just seems silly.
There are two alarm settings for my truck. 1. All Sensors. 2. Perimeter Sensors. The factory default setting is set on All Sensors when I turn-off the ignition, exit the vehicle and lock it. I have to remember to by-pass the default setting and move the alarm icon to Perimeter Sensors each time I exit the truck when I leave the dog inside. I learned very quickly that the alarm setting returns to the default All Sensors each time I exit the vehicle.
 
Have a II+ V3 en route from WALCOTT (was OOS elsewhere I looked, figured buy now or regret it).

Sitting near Kenosha (buried in snow) and looking forward to having the more capable radio to play with in the Pete.

Per an earlier post of mine (Jan of ‘20), okay, took more than a couple of months to get it ordered.

It’ll be “home” before I make it there.
Crossed fingers as to no issues.

Received and, boy, does it receive!

Have used a few times in big truck — this past two weeks in a KW 680 — and Sideband is a revelation compared to what I’m used to hearing.

Adjusted the 7’ Skipshooters to the radio indicating 1.0:1 SWR across the range. Have done some noise abatement in truck.

Not an AM monster. Belongs in my pickup, but it was easiest to use getting into a truck new to me.

Using a Uniden external speaker this trip. Nice test if not desirable long-term.

Given the Scan capability, using this as second radio to the AM talker makes some sense. Antenna for each radio on opposite sides of the truck.
