Ok I've been hanging out here for a few weeks, asking newbie questions and trying not to stir the pot........

Didn't have a cb hooked up for since 1993 until recently. Job had me sitting home due to covid, so I started doing pilot car stuff running a President Andy and a K30 mag mount on my '17 Ram 2500. Didn't think much of it until working with a driver that had a "big" radio. Now I'm back to my regular job, but caught the radio bug.......

I grew to use Facebook for pretty much all of my hobby interests including nostalgia drag racing, trains and heavy lift/crane stuff over the past few years. I killed FB a few months ago and really struggle to stay up to speed until I realized how much content is on YouTube, which is where I found Mike's, BBI, Radio Garage and of course Fine Tune.

Bummer that the text that was here previously was edited out, figured after reading same stuff elsewhere it was permissible.........I accept my punishment.......

Been having fun here, appreciate you guys answering all of my questions. Scored a 3300hp-zx from Matt @ The Radio Garage, haven't hooked it up yet, but it seems like a good rig in the video he posted. Now I want to do some customization, sending it to a member here

Once I get it back I will build a custom radio mount with help from Tap Plastics, some LMR240UF, a custom headache rack mount to put the antenna over the cab some, and top it with a Sirio 5k that I scored straight from the warehouse in Fremont Ca a few days ago.

I would close with "73's" but I have no clue what that means, help me out....Edit - I've been informed......

Welcome, I have an old Connex 3300hp zx. it is a good radio and it should serve you well. Mine has been sitting in the closet for quite a few years. I believe it has a bad final as it only keys to about 6 watts. Anyway, I would have got it fixed but I really don't want to put money into a radio that doesn't have sideband. Maybe someday I will get it checked out. I had too many fingers in that radio with toys to pester my fellow truckers. Copycat recorder, donkey fart, ricochet key up toy, hahaha. The cb world is a better place without that radio in it. BUT I may have to revive it. I am a recovering crackerhead after all. Might be time for a relapse.

Yeah that fine turd is a jerk for sure and I would not spend a penny with him.

I remember watching the video from Radio Garage. Seems like a good guy.

I use pilot cars as regular examples of what to do and what not to do.

Pilot Car Granny in her clapped-out minivan out-talks everyone else with a mag or headache rack mount (and almost all big trucks) as she has a permanent roof-mount antenna.

We walked thru a few pickup installs last summer. Below are abbreviated thread titles:

NEW F350 ANTENNA

ANTENNA PUCKS

MOBILE ANTENNA CHEVY TRUCK

ADD GROUNDING STRAP

You up for punishment (start New Years resolution early) you can try my 579 PETE thread.

Welcome. As another driver I guarantee you just walked into the right tavern.

I've read most of those threads, can't bring myself to cut a hole in the cab roof though.......but I will be asking for ground plane AND common ground advice soon....I enjoyed the pilot car stuff quite a bit, but my regular job as a drilling/piledriving superintendent has much better benefits.........still don't know what "73's" means......

Your truck has MANY (factory) holes.
Quality Antenna mounts don’t leak.

The Install Bible is www.k0bg.com

You’ll be improving the truck (whereas lift kits, mud tires and gooseneck hitches are signs of abuse)

73 is sorta “best wishes”; there’s a history to its use you could look up (more than a six word sentence involved as answer).

.

The term 73 was created in 1879 by Water P. Phillips along with hundreds of other shorthand codes to help those that were telegraph operators.
These codes were shorthand for commonly used words to help decrease the number of characters that were required for sending a telegraph message.

So, let’s take a quick look at what 73 actually stands for. If you did already, sorry for the repeat but…

73 stands for “Best Regards”

So the answer to “which is the correct way, 73 or 73s?” question?
The correct way is 73.
As you can see the word Regards is already a plural form, so by adding the “s” after 73, it makes it a double plural, “Regardses”.
:whistle::LOL:

Well it's been a slow process, and for some reason I've bought two additional radios before getting the first one running........go figure.......

I scored a 980ssb nib for $70 a couple of weeks ago, decided to mount up today. I am a fan of Ram phone mount stuff, ran them on handlebars of several HD's over the years, many miles at very excessive speeds and even a couple crashes, phone was always intact, so I figured I'd try the Ram stuff for this install.

I was able to access a seat bolt, replaced it with a stud and then locked down the seat with a nut/washer. Cut some spacers to the correct height and put the Ram ball on the stud.

6" single section aluminum arm, and then another Ram ball on the radio bracket. I will install a Ram ball on the other radio (Connex) bracket making it easy to swap radios in/out.

Hoping to get the antenna mount installed tomorrow..........

On a separate note, I also completed the install of a Viair compressor/tank/regulator setup today, including relay switch for 110 psi on/145 psi off. Rear manifold for air supply and air bag Schraeder valves also installed, just need to run the supply tubing.

Peace !

Looks great, I am going to check out the Ram mount. Now you need a 203 to go with it.

I've got this little Hooker 100 that I'm sending to Denny to look over before I use it. Hopefully the support stuff is serviceable, it's a stud mount rig from the '70's and mrf450/453/454A transistors are still available.

Thanks for the positive response !

Hi Cabover . . .which TAP plastics do you go to? CA/Bay Area or?
I have been using the one in San Mateo recently, close to work. Santa Rosa salesgirl told me that I couldn't build this tool tray from plastic, SM store was much more helpful. I do bottom end on a nostalgia top fuel dragster, this is my tool tray that I built for it using their Starboard product.

You in the Bay ?
