Midland 13-866 Final/Driver Replacement

Hi all,

I have a Midland 13-866 I'm looking to repair. I have ruled out everything diagnostic wise and have found that the final and/or driver are either weak or blown.

Does anyone know of a replacement for the 2SC1239 and the 2SC1018?

2SC1018 => BD535, 2N5294, KT815V, NTE299

What I don't know is if any of those are still available for purchase.

That's what I was afraid of.

I'll look around and see what I can find. I have seen some on eBay but I've been told to be careful of fakes and I'd rather not buy NOS.

Nothing wrong with N.O.S. It's new old stock. Or new original stock. Some don't understand what it is and will call it N.O.S. even though it's not. Many Chinese sellers will call it N.O.S. so beware! Items such as transistors, ICs, diodes, transformers, chokes, non-carbon composition resistors, and most non-paper caps are perfectly fine to use if they are truly N.O.S. You just have to know how to determine that they are original. Usually if they are in their original packaging they are original. Transistors are faked all the time, as you know, so originals or equivalents are harder to get. You might try Ken's Electronics. He has a lot of old stuff and is very knowledgeable on this. You usually have to call him. He has more than what is listed on his website.

Just looked at his webpage and it looks like he has these in stock. I'll give him a call this week. Thanks!

In the meantime, I DID find these according to this sheet. RFParts has the 1957 and the 2166:

2SC1018 -> 2SC1957, 2SC1760, 2N3553(?)
2SC1239 -> 2SC2166

The 2SC1957 should replac the 2SC1018 driver okay, just be sure you have it turned around the right way. Can't remember if the leads have the same assignment order. The 1957 might have to go in "backwards" from the 1018. Can't remember.

The 2SC2166 should serve in place of the 2SC1239 okay, but mounting it will require some improvisation. The 1239 is a TO-5 size metal top-hat can welded to a heat-sink flange with two screw holes. The 2166 is a TO-220 like every radio made since 1980 has used for a final transistor. The leads should reach through the round hole in the circuit board and lap-solder to the foil pads around the edge of the hole. Just be sure they're connected to the right spot.
