Early in my CB journey, I built a 3/4 wave vertical and it surprised me with how poorly it performed compared to the 1/4 wave that preceded it. So I wrote it off and never looked back. BUT now with the wisdom that comes from putting six decades behind me, I realize it just had a much higher...
Conditions were pretty good out here up until yesterday when it really thinned out. Still managed to talk to Hawaii, Nevada, and Idaho. But today is absolutely dead except for a couple locals. Thank goodness for locals LOL!
You just reminded me of the days when every drug store (and electronics retailer) had a tube tester! As a pre-teen I would visit the local dump, extract as many tubes as I could from dead TV's and radios, and then haul them all down to drug store in bags to test them. Good memories. I still...
It looks rough. It almost looks like it was damp for a long time and got corroded, but maybe that's just dust. Hard to tell from the photo. If the insides look as rough as the outside it's going to be a major project to get it back to good working order!
It's been booming in from every direction up here on the west coast of Canada! The last few days have been a skip bonanza! E-skip to California and all up and down the west coast. Very short skip to Alberta and northern Idaho. Hours long openings to the east coast and deep south. And then...
Adding heavier wire will slightly increase the bandwidth of the antenna, so long as the wire is the same length as the original. You can put a beefier cap with a higher voltage rating in as long as it's the same capacitance. So if there is, for example, a 500 pF cap there now, the replacement...
Nice! That's something I've been thinking about as well. I always thought it would be cool to have a radio up on top of some hill or mountain and be able to control and operate it through a browser.
Especially now that we're on the downslope of the solar cycle I'm thinking of ways to boost...
It's been very slim pickings up this way. Most days nothing happening on the radio at all until late afternoon when we may or may not get a bit of short skip towards the southwest states. Hawaii still makes it here reliably almost every afternoon and evening, but the usually loud Australians...
In this case, replacing the caps is likely to be the fix. As you said, they are 50 years old which puts them about 20 years past their best before date. Many of those caps will be way out of spec. Recapping the radio or at least the modulation section should fix the issue.
That is one of several Cobra radios that have a known issue with the AWI, where it lights up even if there is nothing wrong with the antenna system. It would seem that the 29LX model does disable transmit when the AWI is activated. The fix may be as simple as adjusting the correct VR in the...
Not much happening here, just a few murmurs from Hawaii, which is in the wrong direction. Hoping it swings around towards the US later so we can try and reach some of y'all on 35 USB..........
