I figured i would have to manually switch between AM and SSB to rx anything, I can hear CW signals just fine on SSB. So there wouldnt be any harm done keying the rig that fast/much? And I could just hook my key up to the ptt switch and start keying away in am mode?

ok... update time: when I turn on the radio its in "10 meter mode" (mind you, it was never converted to go up into 10 meter, this is just what I call it because its up in those frequencies) and channels above 30 are very quiet (i was able to hear some CW on channel 12, which was 28.035MHz...

the VCO voltages are pretty far off if i remember correctly. ill go check them in a little while and post them. Also, when i say "tap" i mean "tiny slight light touch" It doesnt seem like loose parts, pressure doesnt seem to make any kind of difference when i press the area. Thanks
