    148gtl tx/rx light flickering

Just a quick update on my situation. I had severe rx/tx flickering when keyed up and pushing modulation. Upon further inspection, one of my caps was popped, specifically a 1000uf 25v cap near a small yellow transformer (I can't find a good PCB map to point this out but there is really one cap...

    11 meter is very quiet?

Last night (Sunday) LSB38 was so hot, it was pretty much impossible to get a word in. So no DX confirmed, but im sure someone was trying to get back at me just didnt hear them in the scamble. Re old time CBs getting back - Yes, thats me! More like a 27 year hiatus though! Funny enough when I...

Galaxy 959 shorts out a few seconds after power up

I was able to use AM fine, so I assume driver and final probably OK.

Galaxy 959 shorts out a few seconds after power up

I noticed while measuring amp on another working SSB, and keyed I get maybe 1.7-2amps, and amperage fluxes 2-7 with mic modulation. In comparison on my 959, I can be completely silent, no mic gain, no RF power but amperage still shoots over 4-5 when on SSB RX. Just adding some more interesting...

Galaxy 959 shorts out a few seconds after power up

I am just at a loss where to go next. If my voltages for driver and final are to spec, then what might be causing amp draw on LSB to go nuts on TX?. What could cause the amperage to go up longer key is down on AM? On AM TX amp draw starts at around 2 but will climb .1 very slowly if keyed down...

Galaxy 959 shorts out a few seconds after power up

I did make sure traces and solder is clean, double checked between all legs and legs and chassis for shorts, all good.

Galaxy 959 shorts out a few seconds after power up

I accidentally deleted my last post but I was coming back to say I did end up getting the voltages to set right. I don’t know what I was doing wrong originally. So driver and final voltages set 3.65 and 3.75 respectively. The amperage at power wires goes to 4 amps and climbs the longer I keep...

Galaxy dx959 mosfet final and driver bias voltage?

Do you need to key up to take voltages? When I measure without key, I get 1.48V on driver, and if I key, it goes to 0V. When I measure final, I get 0.8V and 0 on key. V12 and V10 only give it a few 0.1’s.. so I can’t seem to get anywhere near the numbers your suggesting. Any ideas?

Galaxy 959 shorts out a few seconds after power up

I am going say 5-6+ amps is extreme.. saw a DC amp test on YouTube and I guess this radio should pull closer to 2.8-3amps.. so going to say something is just not right.. too much power killing the driver.

Galaxy 959 shorts out a few seconds after power up

Update: radio is back on and I can RX no issue, all working normally.. I can also TX but this radio is pulling 5-6amps on keying so my 2.5amp power supply trips.. I have a 15amp DC unit but afraid to use it without and fusing as its a 13.4v 15amp supply.. 5.6 amps on key seems high but I guess...

Galaxy 959 shorts out a few seconds after power up

It def was not shorting out, but I didn’t add any white goo (which I do have) so I will put another in and make sure both sides of the white insulator are goo’d. Fingers crossed

Galaxy 959 shorts out a few seconds after power up

Unfortunately I replaced it and it did turn on and work a bit but no real power on meter and then appears that the 520 in q49 shorted out again. Where should I look next? Should I replace both the driver and final at same time? I don’t know enough about schematics to tell what could be happening

    148gtl tx/rx light flickering

My 148 is the 5 pin mic. I suspected the MIC had issues as it was a old ARIES 509 and just moving it made a difference in the RXTX light flashing - so I got a handy 5 to 4 pin jack to use another known good mic. I just gave that a test and it still kind of sort of drops out. When I tested, the...

Galaxy 959 shorts out a few seconds after power up

Thanks and great advice Andy. I did get a 10 pack of IRF520s, purposely avoided anything that said IRF520N just to be consistent but I don’t know the manufacture of them - guess ill see when they get here. Do you suggest I just replace both at same time or do you think that’s not worth the time?
