I always found the UV-5R's modulation very low. There is a mod to increase that and make it so one doesn't have to yell into the radio.

Only thing that comes to mind that it may be the transistor in the back of the radio near the power connector. You can use a TIP42 in place of it. Unsure if that only deals in AM and not the SSB side of things. Even if it doesn't fix it, it is a good idea to replace it from what was there...
Thank you so much!! Still helps that you scanned them in too. Radio works great again and waiting for conditions to pick up a bit before trying to DX some with it. :)
I had a "parts" Kraco SSB De Luxe mobile radio I bought I think in 2020, and it was a couple years ago I brought it back to life... :) That was an awesome feeling once I replaced missing parts. Once I replaced the missing parts, it still was 0 audio and was not working... I felt around with my...
Honestly....
I can see this being my wife's next CB radio. She wanted something very compact to fit in her 2017 Civic. She has a Uniden 980 SSB but not currently installed.
I have 3 of the TS-830S radios. Two work, the 3rd one was part of a trade I did with a friend last year. VOX works and will put the radio into transmit, but no audio ever makes it to the finals... :( Project for another time.
I got a few of the Slant Face SSB radios that need to be recapped. They work but the SSB slowly fades away on receive, and the other one take a bit for the audio to actually go through when you key up the mic.
Capacitors are basically 50 years old soon. Hope ya get it fixed.
I was against an unlocked clarifier for the longest time. Not sure why... But once I learned that even though I thought my Grant XL or any of my other radios were "aligned", I find it very annoying that when you power up, it does take a good 15+ minutes for the radio to slowly get on frequency...
This is related on what I was having when I used an adapter to use 4 pin cobra mics to my old Cobra 140 GTL 5 pin socket. Only this time, it made modulation too harsh to the point of distortion.
As Nomad explained, its because the ground of the mic element is separate of that from the common...
It caught me by surprise too. I knew the 146 GTL does not have it, but when I looked on the 140 GTL, its missing. Which is why I opened up a 142 GTL base radio to see how the dynamike was wired up.
