I was hoping to see this radio first-hand at the Huntsville Hamfest this past weekend, however, Yaesu did not have one on display (which I thought was kind of odd).

Ouch on the price! I still love my FTM-350 and will probably not replace it until it dies. These companies must think we are made out of money?

It's unfortunate, but true in many aspects. I always believe in helping people with this hobby - regardless of new or old. I guess people forget that we all want the same things in life. Courtesy and respect can go a long way.

I'm a big fan of my FTM-350 and have never experienced any problems with it. Maybe useability could be improved a bit, but for the most part it does what I expect it to.

The FT-897D is my first HF base radio and is well worth the money I spent on it. I would highly recommend getting the 897D. It has so much to offer in one package and makes a great all around radio.

The FT-897 is a great radio... it's my primary base rig. I'm sure you will enjoy it. As for accessories - I just have the LDG AT-897 antenna tuner, a Signalink USB sound card interface for PSK31, G5RV Jr. HF antenna, 2m / 440 antenna, Yaesu MD-100 desk microphone, LDG Meter, and CAT computer...

It's for non-Hams I guess... give it to the wife while out camping. She can clip it to her shirt.

Nice. I dig the color screen... I wonder how well it can be seen during daylight hours in direct sunlight? I noticed the new Icom radio went for a mono-chrome touchscreen. Both seem like very nice radios.

I agree. I think we need to step up the game for US Hamfests! I'm pretty sure attendance will increase with something like this...

Well, I pulled-up the map for Columbus, Ohio. There are plenty of Digi's, D-Star, and other repeaters in close proximity, as well as a local APRS iGate. You should be able to transmit and receive APRS just fine.

Messages can be held at the local iGate until a station comes back into range. But, they can also timeout... after x amount of time. I think it all depends on the setup.

Do you normally show-up on APRS when you send position data? Where are you located? Is there an iGate or Digi nearby? If you show-up on Aprs.fi just fine when moving around with your HT. Try sending me a message to see if it makes it to me. I also have the VX-8R - so I could check my...
