Sirio mobile antennas, which is which

The Performer 5000 is the one with the built in lever to fold it over. It doesn't make any difference which you go for because they all handle higher power than the limiting factor which is the coax. RG58 is rated for 400W maximum and that's with a 1:1 SWR. The higher the SWR the lower the...

    EXCESSIVE COAX

Yes. That's because they've got a poor RF ground so the antenna system is trying to use the coax to compensate for that. By coiling it up they're choking off the coax after that coil, effectively altering the length of the antenna as far as the antenna system sees it, which alters the tuning.

    EXCESSIVE COAX

Sorry but this is rubbish. Absolute unadulterated bollocks. It won't cause any problems unless you have a poor RF ground and no choking at the antenna so the coax is being used to compensate making it part of the antenna. As long as your antenna installation is done properly other than bending...

LOL at the 9dB gain claims.

Base New sirio gain master 5/8 improvements ?

You need to keep it whippy. Its flexibility reduces the wind resistance, wind load and therefore stress on the base section in high winds. Stiffen it up and you're likely to see it bend/snap.

RCI 2995 DX HP Off Frequency on LSB Transmit only

DO NOT DO THIS WITHOUT TEST GEAR. Do not trust what other people are saying about you being off frequency or what your other radios receive it like because unless you've tested them for accuracy there's nothing saying they're right either especially if they've got a clarifier. You need to put...

Mobile swr went from 2.0 to 1.0 with ice on car

Actually it doesn't surprise me. Snow/Ice doesn't raise SWR, what it does is alter tuning. As RF flows over the surface of a conductor (both radiating element and counterpoise whether wire or vehicle body) then anything on that surface affects the RF typically making that conductor, altering the...

    Magmount Antennas

No they're not. If they were they'd not require matching sections. The coils don't add length, they transform the feedpoint impedance to 50 Ohms that the radio wants to see. Magmounts use capacitive coupling to connect to the car body for a RF ground. The car body is still a ground plane for a...

My Old K40 rides again !

It's not beyond you especially for simple SWR sweeps, there's plenty of Youtube videos. You can get the cheap ones with the 2.8" screen for not a lot of money.

    stryker sra 10 mog mount

Not sure why you think that the Stryker will be any better especially when some of your RF power is being used to light up a stupid light. If the 5000 is picking up every bit of static so will the Stryker, the only way for it not to is if it has less performance. The noise could actually be a...

    dirty 'balun' (choke) for mobile?

Tuning it is not going to cure the problem, putting in a RF choke is just going to hide the symptoms. A dirty choke is coil of your coax made of 5 turns with 4.25" diameter for 27MHz and it needs to be at the antenna which clearly isn't really realistic in a mobile install. As mentioned you need...

Sirio MAG 145 PL mag mount

No, the flat metal disc doesn't connect to the foil, well not directly. You can however check for continuity by making a very small hole in the center of the foil, putting a probe there's another metal disc there that's attached to the one you can see when you remove the top section that I guess...

Sirio MAG 145 PL mag mount

I'm not sure whether to hug you or hit you for bringing this back up :LOL::LOL:. Seeing that post made me paranoid I'd not checked when I fixed mine years ago when the braid came desoldered so I just took it apart to check. Good job I did because the rubber waterproof sleeve around the...

    Help with rv antenna

Almost all tubular metal antennas are built from aluminium tubing. So what's the problem? The main issue is not whether the aluminium is good for a RF ground, it's about the physical strength of the bodywork to support a mount with an antenna on it.

    Newbie Questions

Unfortunately it is unlikely to do what you want, at least for local comms. For local comms it's pretty much line of sight so if there's a hill or mountain between you and who you want to contact it's not happening no matter what. You'd be able to work DX, stations from long distances away...
