I should add that the SWRs went wacko every few years. I'd spray a little electronics or tuner cleaner up one of the week holes on the bottom and everything would be fine for a few more years.
Also, I did not leave the antenna expose to the elements. I wrapped in automotive wire loom. That...
I was camped out on my boat at Dry Tortugas National Park working my marine CB set up. There was some activity on LSB 39, 38 and 37, but not the pile-ups we get during peak activity.
I was out on the boat with my marine mobile set up - a Glomex marine CB antenna and a Cherokee AH-100 SSB walkie talkie.
For the second day in a row, Brasil (Portuguese spelling) was coming in on several frequencies. Lots of USB 40 and USB 38 traffic from there.
I heard someone speaking...
Sounds like we are seeing some of the medium arc skip. I'm working Key West to Kansas, Minnesota, Maine, Montreal, Nova Scotia but nothing in between (Georgia, NC, SC, etc. The short arc skip is just not there.
I'm out on my boat 25 miles west of Key West. With a barefoot Cherokee AH-100 walkie talkie and a Glomex marine CB antenna, I just QSOed with 621 in Maine.
Yesterday, I picked up tons of stations out of Brasil on USB and LSB 40, USB and LSB 29 and USB and LSB 30.
Interesting conditions...
Based on the positive feedback, I propose we do our "Unit 399 Memorial Net" the week-end of May 16 & 17. That gives us time to get the word out here on WWDX. It also avoids conflicts with Mothers Day plans folks may have next week.
Do we want to use LSB 16, USB 35 or USB 40, our usual WWDX...
What if we dedicated a skip week-end to JJ. A "WWDX Unit 399 Memorial Skip Net". It would be a way to allow all of his WWDX friends to pay respect in a way that we all enjoyed with him.
What do you folks think?
Definitely old school for me. Base #1 is a Realistic TRC 465 with a Johnson desk mic. Base #2 is the Realistic TRC 490 seen in my banner. I bought it brand new in 1981. It been running with its Turner Super Side-kick ever since. My marine mobile is Cherokee AH-100 AM/SSB walkie talkie.
Old...
I definitely get bleed-over from AM17 and AM 15. But my skip log shows that the frequency where I have made the most contacts over the long haul is LSB 16. Remember also that some guys are still running those old 23 channels sets. LSB 16 lets them stay in the game.
Food for thought.
