rf/if alignment and possibly the vco or mixer elements are beyond my knowledge as yet. Perhaps at some point I'll study such in my limited free time.
Got the factory refurb unit installed yesterday and got the SWR to 1.5, next weekend going to attach the ground strap and see if I can get it a...
Okay, final post on this radio. I successfully replaced the final (2166) and testing I now get faint white noise through the speaker (static) but the same transimit symptoms as before. All lights are on, when I key up the red TX light is on but no response from the meter and no audible...
On my base rig, Cobra 142GTL (yeah, I know, it's an ancient P.O.S. as I've heard so often in these forums) :sneaky2: and a shop added a potentiometer to the side of the case so I could tune down the radio when using the brick. Unbeknownst to me when I bought this rig it had an updated extra...
From a couple of other folks I've heard from, I can go and try to replace the 2166 and see if there's any improvement. Logically, if not pull the transistor as a spare and just get another radio as the test gear and procedures are beyond my understanding when it comes to IF mixer or TX voltage...
Yeppirs, I've been in contact with Mark and he's a straight shooter all right! :thumbup1:
Given the results of testing this little 520, the trouble may not be with the final after all. (there was 0 audio on the receiving unit and no meter activity on the transmitting 520, I couldn't check...
Thanks guys, but I'm concerned that other transistors may not be compatible. (got the jitterz from watching a youtube video today about the fake transistors out there)

Hi folks,
This may be beyond any novice repair but I got this radio for free so if it's within my capability I'd like to see if I can get this bugger working.
The radio is a Uniden Pro520XL mfg in Taiwan. :sneaky2:The Ch. lights work properly and I can hear the familiar "pbt" when keying...
I really didn't want to pull the PCB from the chassis to address that R162. An odd thing though, I noticed when I ran my voltmeter to the hot contact wires the voltage was variable, but I was glad it came to life with just soldering these new LEDs in and not a flicker from the lights from that...
Oftentimes I'm running 17~27.165 as I-5 (North/South) freeway is within broadcast range and most radio traffic eminates from there.
'Turbogus' is my 11 meter handle "KAKU6678" remember those?
I was undaunted to give this another try and got some 12v LED's w/resistors coming from Washington State, but will the jumper for R162 be required when using true with these? Since this is my first work on a PC board I may have to farm it out to a reputable shop if this is the case.
I just found out from another forum (although I like this one the best) that Rolling Radios has the 12v LEDs. Given my limited experience with circuitry (primarily automotive) I'm thinking this is a way to go.
Thanks so much for sharing your experience and knowledge. LC
