Yes he does that and I always do too. 2SC2879s always have a little bump on the center bottom of the their die cast base. I noticed when removing the transistor from my TX600 that it didn't take any effort to break the screws loose. Maybe drying out causes the compound to lose density opening up...
I had one of my amps blow a pair of Toshiba 2SC2879s. Sent it back to the builder and he said that the heat sink compound had completely dried up to powder. He said that he used ARTIC HEAT SINK COMPOUND when he did the update for me. Evidentally more expensive doesn't mean better. He had also...
Shitty neighbors can be a major PITA. When we lived in SoCal, our Korean neighbors had a tiny dog that barked 24/7. Totally annoying. I asked them politely to quiet it down. Their reply- " No speakee English."
I recorded their dog for about an hour's worth to take to the city to complain. Before...

Since the amp works when the hi/lo switch is in lo. The trouble lies in the hi portion of the circuitry. Like brandon said, check the switch. In the hi position the switch should show open. It looks like the hi contact it connected directly to the wire of the input transformer, which is...
If the 47 ohm resistor gets hot when the switch is in hi, there is a bad connection in that circuit. Or a miswire. You may have to bite the bullet and remove the board fro from the heatsink. Can you post a picture showing the connections on the hi/lo switch.
Check out the hi/lo switch. top terminal should go to the 47 ohm resistor. Middle term should go to center pin on input SO239 when the amp is in xmit. Bottom pin should not be connected to anything. If it is, disconnect it and test the amp again. Are you certain your wattmeter is accurate. Maybe...
Here's a pic of a silver streak 200 linear. Exact same board as the comet 200. The resistor that was burned shows as a 47ohm-2 watt resistor. Probably connected to the hi/lo switch and pads the input drive down in the lo position. You can check this by putting the hi/lo switch in the hi position...
Last night was amazing. A totally clear night at the farm, not a cloud in the sky. I snapped a picture. Reminded me of a night on I-40 in the Texas Panhandle on my way to California.
