    Thanks for the advice. I removed the pre-amp and rewired the base to a non-pre-amp configuration ... and viola, both god audio and good reports. Pre-amp appears to have been the culprit, thankfully, altho there are replacement elements available. Cheers & 73, Chuck W1EMQ
