Me and my bud put up a Diapole today. I took a bow and arrow shot my string over top of two trees about 70'. Got it up about 55' strung out all way across my back yard. SWR is 1.1 Laid it all the way out horizonal. Looking foward to trying it in DX. I can cut the closest station to me by 5-7 s units. Are these things directional when on the flat side? Its facing North/South if so?

A beautifull heigth! well done! that smells for DX.

Yes a dipole is directional.

If you would walk over the dipole like a circus guy...
if you look to the left and rigth..there is where your signal is going.

If you look behind and in front of you there is the weakest point of the dipole.

The pattern of the dipole at this heigth is a figure 8 looked from above.
You could place that figure over that dipole...so your walking looked from above over the center horizontal line of the figure 8...(pff...thinking im makingit myself difficult to explain lol).

This figure is not a "clear" figure 8. In fact if you would place your dipole at say 10 feet the pattern would be almost round.

Enjoy the DX! USA is comming in here in Europa almost every day now.

A picture of worth a thousand words...don't believe you won't be able to make contacts in all directions - it is all about propagation...I've worked all 50 States on my Dipole and a bunch of countries running under 5 watts...

Cool!!! Thanks fellars!!! I guess by the way the diagram looks on here (the pic) its North & South?

Maybe I should turn it east and west???

I finished it in the dark last and didnt get a good look at it until this morning! Its about 52'

Should I turn it to the east?

I had to leave to go play on the road this morn but I could tell it is working !!! I found some skip coming from spain this morning. I had like 1 s unit on the gentleman on my imax and 7-9 s units on the wire!! It works !!!

Looking forward to talkn sum good DX !!!

If the "tips" of your Dipole are pointing North and South - you will have your best radiation pattern for contacts West and East. If your "tips" of your Dipole are pointing West and East - you will have your best radiation pattern for contacts North and South of ya.

If you are hearing what you think you want to hear, leave it alone. If you want to see what you might hear with it turned 90 degrees, keep the present antenna where it is and string up another one. Then you can switch between the two and see what happens. Think you like one more than the other? Take that other one down. (Leave that 'string' over the trees though, no telling when you might need it again.)

+1

I used one years ago near Lake Tahoe. I strung it vertically when backpacking. They are marvels for that - but use a slingshot stead of a bow . . . a lot easier to pack.
