Best Mic for a Browning Mark 3

The original Browning mic is hard to beat. I believe they used a ribbon type element and it has very good frequency response when connected to the high impedance input of the Mark III. The unamplified D-104 is a good second choice however, finding one with a good element is difficult today. Most of these crystal elements have gone bad over time and have reduced output with a decrease in bass response. The modern electrete replacement element for the D-104 is not suitable for the unamplified mic since the new element requires power.

I used a Tuner +2 with my old Mark III for a long time, then got a Night Eagle. I liked the Night Eagle best, and not just because it looked good with the radio, but IIRC it was amplified I just turned it down a good bit.

i prefer the browning 776, the browning banana mic and unamplified d104 for all my brownings, i have the mkIII,IVA and the Eagle R27/S23 However, i recently picked up an old Stromberg Carlson MD30C High impedance head "looks like the astatic 10DA head" and popped it on a astatic unamplified G stand and it sounds super!! so i'm now running that on my MKIII and the Eagle R27/S23.
