Has anyone ever put both a beam and an omni on the same tower? For example, I would like to put a 4 element beam on a tower with a workman
W-58/ Maco V 5/8 above the beam on the same tower. Anyone have any experience with this?

Hi you might read my M-216 big daddy antenna post there is some good info in there. I asked the same ? about that and they said not a good idea. The post is in the Antenna fourm. God Bless.

Its not a good idea if the beam is vertical My uncle tried that with a moonraker 4 and it didn't work well at all... If its a flatside beam then by all means go for it..... Hams do it all the time with tribanders and will mount a small 2 meter vertical antenna on top or a 2 meter beam.

IF the beam is a flat Yagi beam AND the vertical antenna doesn't have ground plane elements on it; then it will work. Otherwise, if the ground planes are on the vertical they will interact poorly with the Yagi.

If the beam is a Quad or a Quagi; forgetaboutit . . .

I have done the same as I only had one mast at the time...I worked alot of dx and that is mainly dependent on conditions so I really could not tell if there were any impacts. As long as I was making contacts every day, I did not even think about it. So get on the air and enjoy the hobby.
Now that havin been said: theory and common sense tells us that there will likely be some interaction between the two. What that effect would be and whether you would be likely to tell that difference remains to be seen by your experience.

If one mast is all you have, you can give it a try and see what happens. It may work well for you. It is hard to tell.
Best of luck and let us know how it works out for you as this adds experiences that can help others.

enjoy the hobby.

I ran an old rat Shack 5/8 vert above my tribander for 3 years, no problems. It was about 8-10' above and had no effect on the beam.

I tend to agree with binrat. It is likely with a setup similar to what he describes...that the beam's pattern will be affected somewhat, but probably not enough as one could tell just using their radio.

I have a model of a Penetrator 9' feet above a 2 element yagi, and it shows very little affects on either antenna. However, the beam's rejection appears to get a little worse with the SP500 up above.

I once place a Starduster on a 10' mast above my 4 element "H" yagi, and with the radials hanging down almost to the beam, I was hard pressed to see a difference, even in the match for both. The combination seemed to work great.

Sure, if it is up 9 ft above a Yagi. But then; you would need pretty strong rotor to support all of that. Not to mention, the dreaded windstorm would have more leverage to take it all down.

AS far as not noticing a difference with a small Yagi; did you check it before and after with a field strength meter?

Just a thought, and yes I maybe on drugs with this one.
If the beam is horz, could you put the vertical just above it without the ground radials? And hopefully the beam would act as ground radials for the vert.
