I use Times Microwave Coax, LMR-400. Its avialable at HRO AES Ham Radio Stores, or the guys who sell coax and stuff.

Its the good stuff.

But the LMR-400 is the good stuff for sure, take it to the bank.

I wish I had a dime every time someone has e-mailed me having antenna problems, that are from bad Coax , or crimped coax connectors, or poorly soldered coax connectors.

The funny ones, are the ones that ask how much water is allowed in the coax, hehehehe the answer of course is none. The Coax Connectors are not water proof, you have to make them water proof. Using shrink sleeving, black tape, and Silicon RTV Rubber.

Using the RG8X coax will work but the question was, what is a good upgrade. And LMR-400 is a excellent upgrade Coax.

Again wishing I had a Dime for every time some has removed the RG58 or RG8X to install a better Coax. I use RG58 to tie up branches and trash. The RG8X I have a few jumpers made from it.

A good concern to a antenna installation, is that you don't want to have to do again, by installing the good stuff the first time around. Its cheaper and better that way. It makes good sense in that if your going throw any fire in the wire. Another good thing with the better coaxes, they sure last longer.

Gotta agree with Jay on this! I took Jays advice and used the LMR400 on my last install, this stuff rocks!

LMR-400 is a hard coax, i also heard of some people talking about a coax called 2015 and they say it is 100% shielded and you can wrap it around a coke bottle it is so flexable, now i have never used this coax and have no clue about it, just what i hear. I use RG-217 and it is FANTASTIC.

At what level wattage wise does the arcing start to happen?

Most of us arent running competition levels of power but nevertheless enquiring minds want to know.

Most of the time beacuse it is a lack of ground on the amp or like 2020 said the connectors are too small. I personaly run a 3cx3000 with 217 coax and I have never had a problem. But my 217 dosent have a pl 259 connector on it either.lol

I cant recall they part number on the connector for 217. But there is a fellow named Danny at Nemal in Fla that does those for me. I would run a lc on 2 -3000's but I dont think it is a must on 1...

running rg8x 75 feet....what would you reccomend for a upgrade....ive heard of double shield.do you know a decent brand of this kind....normaly run 4 to 100 whiskys .

No doubt, LMR 400, the tech geeks have been using it for long data runs for years and has a great velocity factor with outstanding shield charisterics.

Here's a LINK to a table of specifications for quite a few varieties of coax currently listed on MIL-C-17 (the chart says MIL-W-17, which isn't correct).

RG-8X, "mini-8", or whatever it's called, is NOT listed because it's not used by the military. Outside diameter-wise, it's just about the same as RG-59: about 0.25". That's just about half the size of RG-213, which has the same O.D. as LMR-400, 0.405". You have to use an adapter when installing a PL-259 on 8X, and it's the same adapter you'd use for RG-59.

At 75 feet, I really doubt if you will see any significant difference between RG-8x and LMR-400. And since most coax 'table's don't list it's max voltage ratings anymore (wonder why), no idea what LMR-400's rating is. I do know that the 'better' coax usually doesn't have anything to do with things other than it's signal handling ability, attenuation losses. There are some suprising differences in their voltage limits / arcing, the 'better' ones not always being 'better' in that regard. That does not say that there is anything particularly 'wrong' with LMR-400, there isn't. All things considered, I'll stick with the RG-8x, mainly 'cuz of the price and ease of handling. All of that is at HF! At VHF/UHF it's a different story.

Just go with 600 ohm open wire. Compared to coax it's cheap,no loss and looks COOL
