I have a friend that the transformer went out in his Drake L4b amplifier. It has two 3-500z tubes in it. Is there a after market transformer that will work in it? Or does anyone have one? Thanks

The only source remaining on the planet will be the Peter W Dahl product line from Hammond Corporation.

Scroll down to the two L4 transformers on this list: https://www.hammfg.com/electronics/transformers/classic/pwdahl

This presents you with the two possible versions of the transformer that you have. One of them has a barrier strip with six screws on the underside of the chassis below the transformer, the other version has seven.

Both are listed. You just need to choose the right one to match your power supply.

No prices are shown on their web site any more. Figure close to four hundred bucks with shipping, maybe even more. This is a true "flaming hoops" operation. First you contact Hammond to get a price, and an order number for the actual distributor who will sell it to you. Hammond only makes them, won't sell directly to you, last I checked.

The distributor they always send me to is Digi-Key.

Next you place the order with Digi Key. They fax you a disclaimer form where you acknowledge that there is no return privilege for this purchase. You fax it back to them with a signature.

Pretty sure they will next want it prepaid, and you'll wait some number of weeks for the transformer to get made and shipped to you.

And if someone sells this replacement transformer in a simpler way, I'd love to hear about it.

I just looked at the prices for that transformer at digikey, and you're right it's about 400, the heath kit replacements are more expensive than that. Weird.

Thank you nomadradio I will tell my friend. It is at a shop right now that told him it was bad so we do not know if 6 or 7 wire. I will probably have to change it out for him but do not really want to I do not like working on that really high voltage stuff unless it is mine. Thanks again sir.
