Just purchased a Texas Star Nice looking very clean Sweet Sixteen DX1600. Couldn't pass it up for the price i paid. When i opened it up to my surprise Has one item installed that I never Heard of, Bipolar Transistors=(RFP2879 17-3Q) If i needed a replacement. What could I Install in place of this item.??? I went to RF Parts and they don't list Them. Would a Pair of HG 2879 work? Any input would be appreciated.:(:(

I just did power wire upgrades to the amp and Inside 4 chokes I wound from Power Strip which i installed, to the back of all 4 output transformers. I also Added 3 120MM fans for cooling. I will take pictures and post it.

I do both top& bottom, Bottom is most important for sure Heatsink .But the top has heat from the 5 Watt wire wound resistor associated with the bios. Here are the pictures.I have a problem How do i add pictures to my posts????

Not bad at all.....
I would suggest a solid solder line buildup between each + voltage wire connection on the boards to the transformer voltage input wire.....
That short piece of printed circuit board is still current limiting......
Looks good....
Here is what I am referring to:

I always wanted one. I got one and quickly realized I did not want to afford the electrical requirments to feed it properly. Luckily I got offered more than I paid for it almost as soon as I got it.

Like everything from Texas Star they need a little bit of work out of the box to be durable and reliable even back in 1990's. Back in my day with legit bipolars they could be fantastic legal limit amplifiers!!!

Probably the most abused, over driven and over voltated unit on earth when they had Toshibas in them! Real Toshiba's not the fake ones of today!

Well if you are made out of money you could put MRF454 real ones not fake ones in. Your looking at $200 for a MP though. If you really have money to burn you can still get real Toshiba's but last I checked NOS is like $200 each.

I would run it as is and just do not do anything stupid like pushing the voltage like you could with real Toshibas! I would get a matched set of HG2879's not the "C's" and keep them on hand so when you need them you have them!

In 1991 $9-$12 for SD,MRF,2SC bipolars. I remeber when Toshibas hit $24 each aroud 1998 or 2000. Builders like BBi, Tin Man, Dave Made and on and on ruined it for everyone by pandering to ignorant customers with deep pockets. Now we are paying the price. We are lucky that HG exists!

Run it clean and at 13.8V not 16V or 24V and enjoy the amp!
