My Grandfather's Hammarlund HQ-180 Power Up

That is TOO cool! Same type receiver I was loaned by my Elmer back in 1979. I would listen to that thing day and night, and was amazed how good it sounded and received signals. Actually listened to a 3 way conversation on 10 meters between a guy in New York City, another in San Francisco, and...

    Build a Magnetic Loop?

I'm with sp5it. :) I've heard they are great for receiving, especially on 160 where things are so noisy all the time. My coolest antenna I made recently was a tape measure yagi for 2 meters. Ha! Let us know how you make out. :) 73, Brett

"Antenna Tuners" "L" type, "T" type...I need some clarity please, what works best?

What I am finding is that DX Engineering and Gigaparts show it, but it is not available. It is not on the Palstar mfg website, either. And the last review on eHam was in 2010. Still think it is discontinued. 73, Brett

"Antenna Tuners" "L" type, "T" type...I need some clarity please, what works best?

Pretty sure that one has been out of production for some time. I run the AT2K, and it's a very capable tuner. If you get one, (or any manual tuner, for that matter) and have access to an antenna analyzer, you can plot your tune points on a chart, and when you change bands, it only takes a few...

    Fun Morning on 6m 11.27.17

I have yet to play on 6 meters! Maybe I will finally get around to it after seeing your success. 73, Brett

    yaesu ft-891 and ATAS 120A

The ATAS is pretty particular about grounding. I ran a could of ground straps to the body on mine. Looks like you have a real solid mount, but I would double check it just to be sure, and maybe even scuff up the hole in the bumper. 40 is easily do-able with mine, but every vehicle is...

Used HT for field use, recommendations?

That is why I am glad the Chinese HT's hit the market. I was hoping it would drive the prices down on the Icom/Yaesu/Kenwood units. It seems to have helped with the main unit price, but you are dead on with the accessories... ridiculously high prices for them. Hope you like the RS HT, I don't...

    Pickup truck mounting

I have a Ford F-150, so the bed is probably different. But, I used an L bracket in an existing hole inside the bed behind the cab. I have ran everything on it... Wilson 5' Silverload, Predator 10K, 102" whip, etc., and it holds up just fine. Dual whips look cool, but I don't think you'll see...

Used HT for field use, recommendations?

You obviously haven't seen the quality of things I make. :ROFLMAO: I wanted something I could travel with a LOT, and the K9TAX one is made extremely well. Still holding up just fine after about 4 years of use, in and out of a suitcase. I might have gotten 4 weeks out of something I made...

Used HT for field use, recommendations?

I've considered going with a Yaesu dual band HT myself, but for what I do with an HT, just can't seem to justify the cost enough to pull the trigger. Currently using Baofeng/Pofung UV-82's, which may be a little more water resistant than the UV-5R's. Mine works pretty good with a longer...

ATAS 120 Mount Options Need Input

Sure would be nice if you could just switch out the balls. Rear quarter is higher, and probably better for performance, but that bumper sure looks like a nice, secure place for a stud mount. Maybe do the Breedlove UHF ball mount, and us an adapter like this for 3/8" applications...

    yaesu ft-891 and ATAS 120A

Would be great if you can post up pics of your install. I think there is a lot of interest in this rig and antenna combo, but most of the stuff out there is for the FT-857D. 73, Brett

    yaesu ft-891 and ATAS 120A

They still haven't truly sorted out the firmware, but even with the shortcomings it's a really solid little rig. 73, Brett

    Kenwood radios ?...

Just read this whole thread from the beginning to present. I have gone through many changes in my rig line-up since the start of this old thread. I still love the old tube gear, but also appreciate the new technology. Menu's aren't bad once you set everything, and I like outboard audio, too...

Mobile to mobile on 40 meters

Heard back from John. He is running a Yaesu FT-450AT, a 2 transistor Worth-more amp at about 300 watts, and a Larry's antennas screwdriver antenna. 73, Brett

paralleling 2 35 amp linear power supplies

I ran twin Iota power supplies in parallel for several years with no issues. They are both switching (DLS-45), and 45 amps each. 73, Brett

Mobile to mobile on 40 meters

Not sure what John runs, but I have a Yaesu FT-891 with ATAS 120-A. 73, Brett

Mobile to mobile on 40 meters

Yeah, I was just west of Texarkana, and I think he had just gotten off work. He lives near Canyon Lake. Having fun with this little mobile setup, that's for sure! 73, Brett

Mobile to mobile on 40 meters

Talking to my friend Little John yesterday when coming home from Arkansas, and while I didn't know it at the time, Matt W5MIX recorded us. Rough and tough conditions, for sure, but we had a decent qso at about a 430 mile distance. Despite the limitations of the ATAS-120A, the system works...

    got my ticket tonight

When you get it, be sure to check to make sure everything is right. My street address had two numbers transposed. It was correct on the application, so it happened when they entered it at the FCC. I didn't even notice it because I was so excited to get it... fixed it later on when I caught...
