I have the one you linked, I bought it from Amazon a few months ago. I use it with a magnet mount Wilson 1000 on the roof of my truck. It’s able to tune the phone part of 12 meters to 2:1 swr. And then pretty much the whole phone part of the 10meters to 1.5-1. It’s small and seems to work well...
I have one that I use mobile, with my qt40 in my truck on 10 and 12 meters. I have it wired to 12v cigarette lighter plug. It seems to work good. I have only owned it for a little over two months.
I don’t have a schematic, maybe somebody here has one. This radio is a single conversion uniden chassis. Pc-385 board. The board in these radios is extremely similar to a cobra 140 gtl, now obviously the controls on the front of the radio are different than a 140 gtl. But if you can find a...
Like others have mentioned already. the best 40 channel Ssb radios ever made, at least IMO, are the uniden pc122xl, trc465, 146gtl and similar chassis radio’s. They have excellent tx audio, and are rock solid on frequency. They just work really well, and are good for mobile use as well.
I agree because, thats the kind of radio that was basically a beginners radio roughly 30 years ago. Thats the kind of radio that would sell at a hamfest or local club or something, for $300.00 dollars or less, in good working condition. Maybe a little bit more if it had the matching power supply...
The kenwood sold for $329.00 add at least another $25.00 for shipping handling taxes etc. Then you need to source a microphone and power cord for it,or purchase a plug that fits a kenwood and wire an existing microphone. Pray that the radio is packed well enough by the goodwill people to survive...
Prices get almost as high as eBay. I recently watched a ameritron solid state amp and Mfj manual antenna tuner along with an old shure desk microphone. Sell for almost $800 dollars plus shipping. If it all works perfectly that I guess that’s not a bad deal. But spending big bucks on goodwill is...
That’s awesome man, I don’t know why more people don’t get at least, there tech license. 10 meters is a lot of fun when it’s open and working dx is easy when it is.
I recently picked up a Heath sb-1400 aka yaesu 747gx minus the the front firing internal speaker. The radio will tx on 15 meters and up. A couple of times it has worked on 10 meters and I was able tx in am cw and usb into a dummy load. Then I turned the radio off, and back on about 30 minutes...
I wonder why people do the vfo wind up mods on a 148 gtl and grant lt, to me it seems like a waste of a good Ssb radio. I can’t help but think it makes the clairifier unusable.
If it was made at around 2010 or older it will have a Mitsubishi 1969 final. If made after 2010ish or later it will be mosfet. I have a galaxy 959 made in 2004 with a bipolar final. The only mode is an alignment, it is surprisingly stable after being turned on for about 45 minutes to an hour...
It was on a Malaysian 148 gtl that was very hacked up when I got it. I tried just about every mod I could find on it. I started borrowing parts out of it to fix a cobra 2000 gtl, with the intention of putting them back now it’s a parts radio. I just really don’t like the Malaysian 148’s. But the...
I’m not 100% sure, but if somebody ordered a quantity of those values and changed them out one at a time they probably wouldn’t go wrong. With that being said. I have purchased at least 3 capacitor kits from you, and have been satisfied with them.
I posted the sams list for posterity.
Also check to see if the switch is broken, as in something bumped the switch and pushed it in and it doesn’t make contact anymore in cb mode. I’ve seen that happen before.
Has this cobra 140 gtl been sitting for 20 or 30 years? On one of my cobra 140’s when I first got it, I had the same exact problem as you do, I sprayed some deoxit. In the cb/pa switch and worked it back and forth a bunch of times and it fixed it.
I’m by no means a tech or expert, but from my personal experience I wouldn’t recommend doing the mmm high fi rx or any revive mod for that matter, it seriously screwed up the receive on upper and lower sideband on the radio I tried it on.
Well I started messing with the antenna, I probably trimmed 2 inches off the steel whip 1/4” at a time thinking I could get good swr from ch38 to the tech phone part of 10meters. This thing seems to have very narrow bandwidth.
When I started out I had an swr of 1.6 on 40 and like 1.5 on 1. Now...
