Thanks for the replies. This does not seem like that hard of a project. I found some aluminum to use for radials. Does it matter if the radials are layed out in the shape of an X or is it OK to install them in the shape of a H? Will that effect the way it transmits?
Thank you. That gives me a direction to go. I am going to put up a mast behind my house. I plan to get 20 feet of 1 1/4" galvanized steel pipe and bury about 4 to 5 feet of it in concrete. The first 6 feet above ground I plan to tie into my deck. The antenna on top of that should be about...
Over the weekend I stumbled across a Yaesu 8900R and Comet UHV-4 antenna for sale locally on Craigslist. It was a good price so I bought it. The seller demonstrated it working and everything, but he had it mounted in his car. But I want to run this in my house as my commute to work is very...
Hmmm. That might be doable. I have a 23amp power supply I just bought and I have the cable. I would need to build or buy an antenna. Probably buy, but I will eventually build one for grins. What else would I need? Would the automatic antenna tuner make things easier for a beginner?
That's what I am thinking also Wire Weasel. Either that or he found another buyer. Either way, I will be getting a radio. I don't have my license yet, so all I could do right now is learn how the radio works and listen. But I am almost finished reading the study guide, I have beentaking...
Well, I have not received a rely from the seller in about 5 days, so I think this deal is just about dead. Maybe he got tired of me asking to see it work? Not sure. I will keep looking for a used system.
Thanks for all the replies, I appreciate an honest opinion. The seller has offered to demo the radio for me and show me it works, but I still have not been able to see it. Our schedules do not match very well.
I also found an Yaesu 757GX for sale locally with the power supply. And the...
Alright, looks like we are doing a full test. The seller is being very cooperative. I need to pick up an "antenna feeder cable" with PL-259 ends to connect the antenna to the radio. Any suggestions on what to get? Any brand I should avoid or look for? Anyone on here sell cable that can get...
Youre not raining on my parade, I am right there with you. I got an email back from the seller and he is willing to plug it into a battery so I can see it power up. But he has no antenna to plug it into so we will not be able to transmit, and I assume we will not receive much if anything. So...
Here is a picture of the transceiver and antennae. Can anyone tell me anything from the picture? I think it's a dipole antennae. Would I need anything else besides a power supply and maybe some new cable?
I found a used FT-747 radio for sale with an antennae for $350. Does that sound like a fair deal? I know it is an old radio, but I am just getting into ham radio and thought it might be a good beginner radio. What can I check for when I get to see it. It is unplugged so I doubt I get to see...
The reason I like the VX-8R is I could use it at home, in either of my 3 vehicles, or listen at my desk at work. Plus it seems to have a lot of features and functionality for an HT. I live about 20 miles south of St. Louis and there are a lot of repeaters in my area, including a 70 centimeter...
I am currently studying for the ARRL Technician exam and I am looking for my first radio. I like the VX-8R and want to purchase one before I take the exam so I can start learning how to use it. Would this be a good first radio? If not, what radio should I look at?
