    New Driver

Like all amateur radio transceivers, it will only transmit on the amateur bands out of the box. You need to perform a small mod to disable the TX inhibit function in order to get it to operate on 11 meters. Yaesu FT-2000 (FT 2000 FT2000) MARS/CAP modification -Bill

    TS850S to computer

My understanding is that it's not just a matter of making a cable: you need a TTL level converter too. I would suggest either this: IF-232PX RS-232 Level Converter for Kenwood Transceivers [IF232RS232] - $55.00 : Piexx Company, Computers & Electronics Or this: IF-232usb USB to...

    What radio or radios ?...

Here in San Francisco, it seems like 11 meters will open up regularly from around 10AM to 12PM (PST). Unfortunately, I work 9-5 weekdays, so I don't get to take advantage of this except on weekends. However, it seems like when 11 meters opens up, 10 meters doesn't necessarily open with it. I...

NPC for AM Transformer radios is HERE... Tubed, Solid State, etc. ANY high level TX

Well, I guess at this point I'm kind of confused then. I would help if we could all see the results on a scope. That is, inject a test tone into the audio line, and show what happens to the modulation envelope when you exceed 100%. I thought the basic idea behind NPC was that it _does_ give...

NPC for AM Transformer radios is HERE... Tubed, Solid State, etc. ANY high level TX

A couple things: The flat line where the negative peaks bottom out during over modulation is not really a "DC component." That line is at 0 volts. There's no energy there at all. (If you actually end up with DC voltage getting to your antenna you have a bigger problem than over-modulation.)...

NPC for AM Transformer radios is HERE... Tubed, Solid State, etc. ANY high level TX

loosecannon asks two important questions: "like, is my radio louder with this circuit in it than it was without it?" I think the answer to this is: maybe. An AM carrier that's modulated to beyond 100% is still "louder" than one that's modulated to no more than 100% whether you use NPC...

NPC for AM Transformer radios is HERE... Tubed, Solid State, etc. ANY high level TX

Hm. Ok. So the audio voltage is summed with the supply voltage at the collector, thanks to the transformer, which boosts the output beyond just what you'd expect from the 13.8v supply voltage alone. But -- and please forgive me if I'm being dense here -- that still doesn't answer my original...

NPC for AM Transformer radios is HERE... Tubed, Solid State, etc. ANY high level TX

"With careful tuning of the radios output section, and a 1969, THIS is the way to get 75 PEP out of a 29." Can you really hit 75 watts on a positive modulation peak with a single 2SC1969? (Disclaimer: I don't know the actual specs for a 1969 so I could easily be talking out of my butt, but I...

Control cable for Kenwood HF rig

One assumes the radio came with a copy of the owner's manual. If it didn't, you can download a good electronic copy of it from here: http://www.kenwoodusa.com/UserFiles/File/UnitedStates/Communications/AMA/Manuals/TS-140.pdf (I know it says TS-140, but the TS-680 is the same radio as the...

Control cable for Kenwood HF rig

The original Kenwood IF232 is out of production, but there are companies that sell equivalent adapters. Most sell for about $50, though there's one cheaper one. I'm not sure if that's any better than what they're asking for on eBay. Here's a couple of links: IF-232PX RS-232 Level Converter...

    Dipole noise level

I have the MFJ equivalent to the Timewave ANC-4, the MFJ-1026. These things can work really well, but obtaining good results hinges on two things: putting up a good secondary antenna for capturing the noise, and getting the hang of setting up the device correctly. At least with the MFJ-1026, it...

    High voltage arcing in amp?

I Googled this amplifier and found what I think are some pictures of it from a couple of sources. There was one thing I wanted to suggest, but unfortunately none of the pictures I found helped me figure out of my suggestion would help or not. Anyway, here goes: In general, arcing means the...

    Kenwood 850S Microphone wiring

Kenwood TS-850 mics and other stuff Kenwood recommended either the Kenwood MC-60A or the MC-80 desk microphones for many of their solid state rigs, including the TS-450/690, TS-850 and TS-950 series. (If you have the owner's manual, check in the back and it'll list all the compatible...
