Just thought I'd shell out my two cents here.
For what it's worth, have you ever considered just going out & replacing that old deteriorated antenna with a newer, better one?
for a buck you can get a new Imax 2000. But if I were you, I'd get a Maco 5/8th wave or an Astroplane.
I of course...
Your right Rob,
Not too much else I can do. The remainder of the 60 Hz hum is coming from my meter box of my house mains.
There seems to be no more interference from within my house. None that's reaching my Radio that is. Even that dimmer in the dining room. Although it was loud as Heck...
Hello DXman,
Yes, I have read that somewhere before. Or someone told me before. One or the other. And ya know what? I'm going to do that also. But I will wait till spring because the ground is hard right now & I'm low on materials. Copper is not cheap anymore. I may just buy the un-insulated...
Thank you Rob,
I knew you could use DC, but I did not think of doing it. I will try it.
However, I have ran my Cobra 29 LTD classic with a car battery in one sitting, and my DC power supply in another sitting. Both did not make any difference. But who knows, at this point I will try just...
Hello Jazzsinger,
I was just going back over everyone's replies and I saw you had stated earlier to ground the unbalanced coax side of my choke. My Balun is about a foot & a half below my antenna feed connector. How do you ground the choke? which side is the unbalanced side? the rest of the...
ok guys,
I just got home from work, it's 2:30am Sat morning. I've got my Zachary T. on and hardly any 60 Hz hum. Only on channels 26,25,23,7,6,5,& 4.
All the other channels are good with only 1.1 S units of floor noise. How can this be? Even my cordless mouse from my computer is not...
You guys are great! & thank you for all the possibilities & theories.
Well, speaking of the AM radio trick, Last night I turned off my ANL switch and the 60 Hz hum was ridiculously loud. I had gotten used to using the ANL switch obviously. And The star wars light sabre sound was gone last...
Different radios
lol, yes
I tried everything, different radios, Using only DC power, totally turning off the AC to my house, you name it, I've probably tried it. Sorry for all the pages, but those who are desperate for answers shouldn't mind a bit. That's how we learn. 1 page, to 100 pages...
SOLARCON IMAX 2000 RESULTS! "FINALLY"
Hello LC,
Ya know, I think I will leave the Delrin off for now. As you said, it is debatable.
I personally don't think it will matter much in my application. But in the spring time I may try it.
As for the transformer, Sorry, but I forgot to inform...
Schematic
Yeah, Not just a few hairs LC, but I actually had to go buy a knit hat to
cover up this old bald head of mine LOL!
Yes, your right, (Feeling really ignorant right now, but handling it), I was just looking at that schematic yesterday or so on the "Imax exposed" URL and I did see...
RE: PL-259 Connectors
I buy the gold plated, Amphenol PL-259 connectors from buxcomm.com
They are about $2.39 a piece. I was able to solder the PL-259 this morning to the radio side of my LMR-400 coax again with no problems & no shorts. I also ordered a brand new Imax 2000 for about a little...
Bad luck strikes again.
Well LC, I did it now. The Imax 2000 is trashed. I tightened the coax connector too tight to the antenna and it shorted out my antenna. It wasn't my soldering job at all. I kept getting continuity after I soldered like three or four connectors onto the coax on the radio...
Thanks guys for the tips.
As I mentioned, I have another thread in CB radio. Titled "Crackling 60Hz hum every three channels"
There you can see that I've already came so far in the noise issue. Yes, HotRod, I did turn all the power off for the whole house, I hooked a car battery and went to...
Thanks L.C.,
Well, the weather finally broke & yes! I was able to install the LMR-400 coax, and my home made RF choke balun. I have posted a few new pictures of my Imax 2000 & the mods in my profile if anyone cares to check it out. My oldest son & I did all of the mods last weekend but as I was...
Oh, and one more thing.
The bracket for the GPK is a flimsy piece of chrome plated steel. The tips of the bracket bowed as the radials moved around after tightening the bolts. I've yet to see it last through the winter. If the Balun doesn't work either, I may just get another antenna...
Installed the GPK kit a few days ago on my Imax 2000. To be honest, I can't really tell if there is a difference or not. The noise floor seems to be a bit lower on the db meter, around 1 db on the higher stations to 1.5 or more on the lower channels. 5, 6, etc. I'm still getting a hum in my...
Update 11/3/2009
Finally today,
The weather was nice enough to get up on the roof. I finally installed the GPK kit for my Imax 2000. I have not had a chance to see any differences yet. I will be installing the Balun & the better coax soon. I just needed to get the GPK kit out of the way. I...
