    Help with first HF rig

As a noob on HF myself let me throw in a vote for the 718- It's a very capable radio, very easy to operate and even in stock form has quite a good receiver once you learn how to use it. Does it need filters? Yes. But even without it is a great little unit. HF rigs don't sound good on AM...

What got you interested in radio?

What got me into radio? Nothing- I just was. It was something that I honestly feel I was born to do. From the earliest age I was drawn to radio. While other kids went to sleep with Teddy Bears I had a six-transistor Panasonic and stations from all over. Being fortunate enough to live in the...

    Finally on HF!

Thanks for all the replies! A bit of clarification: Of course I don't need 400w to talk 60 miles- at least not when the band is quiet. I do live in the middle of a valley but the mountains are far enough away to not make much difference- although the station I usually speak with is on the...

    Finally on HF!

Upgraded to General about 3 weeks ago and finally got around to stringing up a couple inverted V's for 40 and 75/80. With the tuner I can also work 20m. First contact last night on 40 was an operator in NH. The PS for my 718 is a little weak so I was only hitting about 70w PEP. Still managed...

    D&A PDX-400 meter?

Really any replacement meter that fits (or can be made to fit) into the hole left by the original meter will do as long as it had the appropriate scale and circuitry. Many replaced the tiny stock D&A meters with larger models that were easier to read.

    Browning Golden Eagle no Keyup.

If anyone has NOS parts for a Browning it's probably Greg Barkett- The man who likes Browning and Trams so much that he bought all remaining stock of parts when the companies went out of business. If you need it he probably has it... http://stores.goldeneagleradios.com/

    Browning Golden Eagle no Keyup.

Just be careful around that mic wiring. There are 414 volts on that mic line!

    2 meters ...hmmm

I was the same way- until a recent bout of inclement weather. It was then that I realized the reliability of a privately-owned repeater system was invaluable in such situations. The crystal-clear audio and mannerisms of the local operators made for excellent real-time reports on conditions in...

    cb help

The importance of a good antenna cannot be over stressed. The old maxim ' a dime in the antenna is worth a dollar in the transmitter' holds true. For a quick and easy- up base antenna it is hard to beat the IMAX. But there are better antennas for not much more money. I just went to the...

    Lightning strikes ... interesting letter

Good thread- just wish I had seen it before lightning hit the transformer on the pole across the street. It took out the satellite receiver, the TV and a small power transformer inside the attic-mounted forced air unit. Fortunately it did not affect any of my radio gear. What struck me (no pun...

    PEP BOYS "Burrito-Dx" ???

Anyone else notice the 'tones' switch on the front panel? The selections look to be a bit too far apart for a switch of that type.

BHI MK3 ON A CB RADIO?

FWIW I have an old Radio Shack DSP sitting up on the shelf. It's reasonable effective on SSB- but isn't worth squat on AM

    Poll for CB radio Operators

This poll question could have been better worded as: How much power are you capable of running out of the base? Or perhaps: What is your maximum output potential? As it's currently worded the question implies as to how much power the operator runs consistently. On a good day I can make about...

    ELECTRIC INTERFERENCE ALL DAY 9/27

I had the same problem with my old 135 Cobra. Some days there would be nothing but S9 noise all day and night. I live out in the desert far from sources of noise. There were no electric fences or grow light houses anywhere near. Nothing in the house was generating the noise. It drove me...

    VOACAP AND 11 METERS

My ham friend down the street uses a CB tuned to channel 19 to check the MUF on 10 meters. When there isn't any activity on 11m he knows that 10 m is probably dead. Of course he keeps the volume on the CB down and just looks at the meter.

    Palomar?

It's not a 90A but it might be a 200x, possibly an early model. A prototype? Hard to say, but if it were there would probably be some markings on the inside, perhaps some engineers notes. It's not a bad little amp but it sure looks as if it could use a cleaning! I'd dust it all off and blow...

President Lincoln 2 ver. 3 VS. President George overall performance requesting input...

I can't speak about the Lincoln II but can offer some insight on the George as I have had two of them. They are good radios but have a couple of design and feature quirks that may be off-putting for some. The high point of the George is it's receiver which was so amazing that even today it...

    VAPING THE NEW SCERGE?

You make an interesting point Stella. True, its just water but where does it go? If someone were to deliberately exhale directly into the equipment then that may cause some premature rust and / or aging issues, but who would do that? My gut says that in normal circumstances - that is, the...

    VARIABLE OUTPUT ON HR 2510?

If you want an HR 2510 with a variable power, buy an HR 2600. It had RF power in the place of the RF gain control. As I recall they were a bit more complicated to convert to 11 than the 2510, but were basically the same radio otherwise. Don't butcher a 2510. They were amazing radios and even...
