Not trying to hijack the thread but since the subject is D&A amps I do have a question:
Why does an external wattmeter deflect downward during modulation when using D&A amps? The owner's manual said it was because RF power meters are not modulation meters but when I use those same meters with...
Radios are better than women because:
Radios have squelch controls so you don't have to hear a lot of chatter.
Radios don't mind if you have other radios.
If you don't touch a radio for a while it will never ask 'Don't you love me any longer?'
Radios will never ask if they look fat.
And...
Gassy tubes will sometimes glow a bit blue under load. I've read several articles on how to fix a gassy tube but IME it's just easier to replace them.
As always, Google is your friend...
Amps- at least good ones- will take whatever you put into them and make it louder. Clean signal in = louder clean signal out. The problem is a lot of solid-state amps are poorly made and will inject some distortion or otherwise 'color' the signal.
As to you question: Yes you can use a...
Only way I'd ever buy anything from Superhawk is if I went to pick it up personally.
Dude's got a shady rep for sure and I've heard some nasty things about how he comes by all these pristine radios, not to mention his prices are beyond crazy.
Still, if it was something that I really wanted and...
They were about as good as Lafayette radios ever got. A real showpiece from a company better known for making dependable but aesthetically-challenged radios. In other words most Laff-a-lot radios were butt ugly even if they did work well.
The SSB 140 was the 40 channel version of the SSB 100...
Didn't you ask this once before?
I liked the CA -72 but it didn't work real well with radios that had a built in compressor such as the 135. For radios that already had an internal mic gain it was a bit of overkill.
They aren't a bad mike, but they wouldn't be my first choice in setting up a...
... WTF it's off the charts. All day and night I'm getting 9+DB of mostly noise. Crank the RF gain up full and I"m STILL hearing the mouth of the south #45 blasting through. You know it's bad when you need 400 watts to talk to the truck in front of you!
That Pride DX 300 was one hell of an amp. One of the few to use a 'real' amplifier tube. Also I would mention the Wawasee JB 2000. With a pair of 3-500z tubes it was damn near unbeatable.
However I do have a soft spot for the sweep tube amps and in that arena it comes down to either the D&A...
Well as it turned out all it needed was a bit of adjustment to the VCO. The channel selector is a a bit worn- no doubt from frequent changing of channel- but it works on all 40 again.
Just picked up this little gem in a recovered semi. It's basically a Malaysian 148 (5 pin) with an echo and a connector for an external frequency counter. Interior says RANGER all over it.
Once I got it all cleaned up (tobacco juice in the mic - ICK!) it seemed to work fairly well except that...
Must admit that I've been curious about one. Not curious enough to make a weekend trip to Macon -although there's a lot to see there, especially if you are an Allman Brothers or James Brown fan!- but I wouldn't mind seeing some of the goods up close and personal.
Wasn't really ever planning...
Try Alan at www.tubesplus.com
He rebuilt my D&A Phantom a couple of years ago and it has performed flawlessly ever since.
It may take him a while (I guess he's busy) but he will get it done- and it will be better than new
If you have a Tram or Browning you might want to consider Greg...
The CA-61 was very close to the Realistic desk mic- wouldn't be surprised to find they were one and the same.
Which radio would you be using it with? Some of the older models had built-in compression and didn't work well at all with a mic that alsoty had compression. The Cobra 135 is an...
Pros: It's a Motorola, made at time when they were the absolute king of mobile communications. IIRC they were made in the USA- or if not, then Japan when Japan was at the peak of electronic production. Built every bit as well as their commercial equipment of the time.
Cons: Kind of lacking...
I have one. Decent little meter, operation is fairly straightforward. What exactly were the questions regarding operation?
For output, select appropriate level from the far right knob and read from the appropriate scale. IME I found that the FWD and REV positions operate much like an AVG...
