    tested my dipole

Thanks for the advice! I keep flipping back and forth on the moxon. Once the dipole is up, I'll see how much attention it catches from the neighbors. I hope to catch a break in the weather and get this up soon. The moxon will probably wait until the spring.

    amp? or big radio?

I'd agree with the others. External amp behind your radio. This also leaves more room for upgrades down the road. Uniden 78 is a good radio too.

    tested my dipole

It worked ok. I only chose the configuration because it was easier. I was able to talk to local stations and even got some dx with it. I'm afraid one of the old timers here has some health issues and the only other station isn't on much anymore. Other than drivers passing through and the 2 truck...

    tested my dipole

It was only about 12 or 13 feet high. I just wanted to tune it and test it out. Once I get it set up permanently, it will be a little higher. The inverted v behind it has been taken down. That's where I plan to mount it.

    tested my dipole

I don't have much vertical droop. The amount that I do have isn't what I am worried about. Horizontal flex is crazy. I'm going to slide the sleeve up to the top and add yet another sleeve to rotate in. I'm also convinced that 1/2" is too weak for the horizontal arms. I may use your advice even...

    tested my dipole

I also wanted to thank vkrules and firerunner for the responses. Conditions were very spotty but I was glad to get out there.

    tested my dipole

Thanks! The frame isn't strong enough to leave up in wind or ice. Actually it's pretty flimsy. I laid it back down. It is sleeved on the mast so it will be rotatable. I'm going to replace the 1/2" pvc with larger tubing before leaving it up.

    tested my dipole

Made two contacts on the west coast with it. 208 San Francisco and 409 west coast. I was also told I made it to Brisbane to 853 down under but I couldn't pull him out of the noise. By time I got it tuned and up temporarily, conditions were fading out.

President HR 2510 And Texas Star DX 400

Waiting on a w2 before I can file my taxes. If you still have it by time I get my return, I'm interested.

    moxon build

I just finished a horizontal dipole with 1/2 inch spreaders and 1 inch mast. I bought 1 1/4 inch to slip over the 1 inch. I'm still not happy with the sideways flex in the spreaders but I'm going to set it up and run it till it breaks.

3 ELEMENT CUBICAL QUAD HOME BREW !

Sounds fun! It's always encouraging to hear those with good results on diy antennas. I've had problems trying to upload pictures too. You can still host and link the image from somewhere else. 73s

    moxon build

I made mine out of 14 g wire and air choke with bolts to connect the wire to. I just need to make a frame to hold it horizontal. With a frame I can rotate it. I'm still going to experiment with the moxon but I'll wait for warmer weather to play in.

    moxon build

I only have one local left and he sits on 38 lsb with a vertical. Local is not a concern on my "base". Keeping weight down for my make shift pvc mast and a lower visual footprint are high priority. Now I'm just trying to maximize results for what I have to work with. I may still build a moxon...

    moxon build

I may just wait until I buy a house to ditch the dipole. Hopefully the raised feed point and changing to horizontal will help enough to hold me over.

    moxon build

I live in a rented house and I'm probably pushing the patience of my landlord with a dipole off the back of the garage. Space is certainly a factor for me. Thanks for the comments so far. The mast will be pvc as well which is anchored to the top of the back side of the garage. I will be raising...

    moxon build

If I stick with the X frame, I plan to bow it a bit to help with strength. I used moxgen to get my lengths. As I've read, the lengths can be a little long. My main concerns after reading on these are strength in ice and wind.

    moxon build

I'm looking at building my own moxon for 11m and am fairly certain I've figured out the "frame" that I'd like to use. I'm leaning towards the X configuration but I like the H frame too. To help, it will be horizontal and I'm going to use PVC to build it. I figured with the X frame I could use...

What got you interested in radio?

I used to drive a straight truck hauling tile and setting materials. I bought my first two radios to run in the freightliner. I progressed to a Lil Wil for the mobile with a Cobra 29. I've owned quite a few cobras since and a few others. I got bit by the ssb bug and only use AM for travel and...
