From about 1982, my "numbers" were NAO223. That stood for North American Outlaw 223. I got these numbers by joining in on a net somewhere on the upper 40 one night. They even sent me a member's card and net schedule. Nice group of folks!
Mod for VX 1700
The modification is also easy for the 1700. It involves a plug with two shorted pins. I'll post more when I get back home to my computer, there. I think the range is 1.6-30 MHz TX&RX if I remember right.
I've got one of these
Hi,
I bought a Vertex Standard VX 1700 back when they came out in 2006-07. It is a very nice radio with very good specifications that are better than most "Ham" rigs. These radios are mostly sold to third-world users, with a few making it into the USA. This being said...
I just picked up a mint Gray 150 A, and was wondering what transistors it uses for power. The regular Gray 150 uses MRF 458s, but I can't find any information as to what the "A" model uses. The maroon vinyl-clad cover is still riveted to the case, and I don't want to drill the rivets out to find...
Hi,
I also enjoy my 897D. After adding a 2.8 Kc SSB filter, it's amazing how good it sounds! Of course if band conditions are bad, you can always select the stock filter from the front panel.

Hi Rick,
I haven't built the kit, yet. However, I've got one ordered, and will let you know what I think when it gets in and I put it together. It doesn't look to be that difficult to build, so I should be able to comment further in a couple of days.

AC5CH
Hi,
I need two each of these transistors. They were used in the FT 747 Yaesus, and also in Furuno marine radios. If anyone has a junk 747 with a good PA section I might be willing to buy it. NOS stuff is acceptable, too.
Thanks,
Steve
Hi,
Those Cam 89s are nice radios! I've got a 23 channel Cobra 29 mobile that uses the same chassis.
The only thing I did with mine was change out the AM detector, NB, and ANL diodes with 1N6263s. They only run about 20 cents each, and make a BIG difference in receive "quality."
You...
For about six months back in the '80s, I worked as an electronics technician for MFJ, and I second all of the comments I've read here. The equipment is relatively inexpensive, but remember that you usually get EXACTLY what you pay for...
Personally, I'd rather buy a high-quality used device...
