Perth is a real nice place, long way from Sydney so I don't get there much.
Christmas in summer, yeh, sort of strange I guess, fake snow on Christmas trees and Santa sweating in his red Suit in near 100 degrees...
Keeping it on tangent, 27Mhz is really quiet here, no matter whats happening...
Ranger,
Did you do the mod? I'd check that it was done correctly (no solder bridges to wrong locations etc.) and if possible reverse the mod to see what happens. Also most of the mods require a CPU reset after they are done, I guess this was completed?
Otherwise...
looks like no-one has any...
Paris,
Just as a test, I hooked up my MFJ-269 for 5 minutes to see what happened. It only shifted very slightly ,freq on the display flickered down/up a KHZ or so, and the RS did not change. As a matter of fact, after about 1 minute the display stayed rock solid but showed "SLP", which I have...
My Magnum 257 was a bit deaf at first, but responded well to a tune...audio quality on rx greatly improved by an external speaker as well. Those little internal ones just don't cut it...
But still no-where near my Yaesu or Alinco. The Ham radios do it all so much better than exports..but of...
The Handhelds I have seen would be hard pressed running 4 watts for any length of time anyway. Just about zero heatsink for the output and not much air space around the bits and pieces inside.
Then again, you guys do see 10 times more kit over there than we ever saw in OZ...
I never had much luck with Handhelds. Had a Mundara SY-201 for a while (AM/SSB handheld) and it was a pretty poor performer.
As to swapping vehicles a lot. When I had a company car I was not allowed to mount a radio in AND I had to leave it at the office overnight (not allowed to take it home...
I've got both the Alinco DX70TH and the Yaesu FT-857D. I used to have an ICOM 706 up until about 4 years ago.(original , not MKIIG).
The IC-706 was a darn nice radio. Just got bored with it..as I do with most radios eventually.
I like both the Alinco and Yaesu, but for different reasons.
The...
Advanced here in OZ.
Gives full access to all bands / modes and the max allowable power (which is 400W PEP).
Was only a Limited (VHF, UHF all mode / 400W and 10M FM) but the Gov. removed code for HF so got an automatic upgrade.
Never did learn CW...
From what I see, they are a good radio..Full stop.
I beleive your no Code is 50Mhz and up? So you'd get 6M, 2M and 70Cm. Plus a darned good general coverage receive for HF.
And Full HF when you upgrade (or move down here to Australia where there is no code for HF).
It has all the bells and...
505NJ, for any mods to just about any radio out there, have a look at http://www.mods.dk.
Also there are heaps of sites specific to the 706, like http://www.dxzone.com/cgi-bin/dir/jump2.cgi?ID=11863
You could probably pick up an older ICOM 706 a bit cheaper (not MKII) which would do the job...
Remote face radios
Just as an FYI, the CB bands down here in OZ are the normal USA style 27Mhz bandplan (very quiet, lucky to find 2 channels in use at peak time) and also 477Mhz FM (which the Uniden would have been one, there are also GME models with remote heads).
I'm surprised there are...
I've got one of these in bits on the workbench now. Been like that for a while actually. Its a bit of a dogs breakfast inside. It looks like someone has tried to fix it in the past, lots of newer looking solder joints, probably looking for dry joints.
There are a couple of wires taped off and...
