The Grant XL is far superior on ssb.

If you want to get really into ssb some radios you might look at RCI 2950/70, CRE 9800, Magnum 257hp or Uniden Grant XL and Cobra 148. All are top ssb performers. I would recommend the Uniden 980, but I don't know if you can mod it for a low dead key.

The galaxy is a better talker than the new Uniden ssb radios. My vote if for a tune up on the galaxy.

I smoked Marlborough reds and Winston full flavor. I really like Bugler RYO too. Now I dip exclusively. I like Copenhagen LC. Because of price though have been getting Grizzly. I go back and forth between mint and wintergreen. The flavor last a long time and the quality is close to Cope.

ssb may be better for skip, especially out of country contacts. I have found that locally you find alot more people to talk to on AM. Correct me if I'm wrong. In my part of the US though ssb is not used much.

It there a mod for variable power or a swing kit for those 980's?
