Recommended mobile radio for new technician

The Yaesu ft-7900 like Mole suggested would be a great mobile, if you wanted something a little further up you could look at the FT-8800 or FT-8900 (I have both but prefer the FT-8800) then there's always the FTM-350 which is a dual band with APRS built in.

Patiently awating the arrival of my Icom ic-7000

I have 2 IC-7000, great radio. I had my one mic upgraded by AB5N, works great will be sending my other one to him soon. I have one mounted in my truck and the other I use for portable back-up use. I sure you'll enjoy it a lot of radio in a very little package.

    A Question for the group

Kids pay $150 + for running shoes, $80 for video games, have all the latest gadgets, so I doubt price is what's keeping youth out. It's more likely those all ready on the bands that keep them out.

    Field Day 2011

Channel Jumper there's a good way to solve your problem. Go out and buy your own radio, and bring it. I brought a brand new Icom 7000 made 238 contacts on 80m with basically just myself and a new ham from our club. The club operated 3 stations 20 m (350+contacts), 40 m (268 contacts), and 80...

    2011 Field Day CW Protocol

Obnoxious cw ops? Didn't know they existed. If you want to do the hobby a favor you might like to change that idea, rather than surrender the bands to those the operate poorly, why don't you make it a point to go out and operate properly so that some my learn from your example. What exactly...

    HAM exam questions??

I've been licensed for 20 plus years. The biggest thing I see is that the testing has to stop being used as an initiation into a fraternity. The exam needs to be relevant to the state of the hobby and change as the hobby changes. This does not require " dumbing it down" either.

    Elecraft K3 Review

G4ILO might I suggest you get familiar with some actual modern technology, because not even one of the things you list is only available to RS 232. Caves stood the test of time but eventually we moved on, its time to move on.

    Regency HR-212

I fear by the time you fill it with crystals you will have spent as much as buying a low priced new rig that would at least have tone encode/decode which is necessary for many repeaters.

well i am finally ready to try ham radio

The best suggestion is to see if there is a local club that offers a course. You will actually learn the material as meet others just like yourself and be introduced to people who can actually answer any questions that you have. Good luck, enjoy, it's lots of fun.

    SEECC info

Thats the way i do it, so I have no issues with it. Maybe they could add that you don't always need to run 1.5KW for every contact but hey that would be pushing it. I'm on the radio for fun when it ceases to be fun I just move on.

    Grounding

Actually there are grounding systems that will prevent damage and they are used all the time, here's video of the CN Tower getting struck This happens all the time and there is no damage, it's really neat when you're on the tower and it gets struck too. I doubt most of use could afford the...

    midland 70-335

It's a VHF radio, I wouldn't toss it. If it works you could use it for an APRS radio, you'd only need crystals for 144.390Mhz Here's a web site for a guy who uses the Midland 70-335 for APRS

    Mobile Apps for radio

Satellite Tracker Plus, Dah Dit, 73 HamLog, and Callbook. Another one that I use that isn't strictly Ham related is Pinout which gives pinout connections for various connector. Scanner 911 is cool to for scanner listening. MobileTAFL which looks up frequency licensing info in Canada.
