There is a pay check attached, it's in the form of being allowed to use vast sections of very expensive radio spectrum. Believe me as governments look to find a quick buck the spectrum is going to look very attractive to them. The fact that it's populated by a bunch that can't seem to get...
I agree that using code as a litmus test to allow one to operate on the bands is as silly as saying that you can't operate because you don't know networking protocol, can't program a handheld, or don't know how voice over IP works. Those things are just as relevant to the hobby, and some might...
The problem is that what some amateurs find egregious really don't matter that much and really are protocol issues such as using different terminology, even swearing.
Here are the big issues;
1. Causing interference to another licensed user.
2. Transmitting outside the provisions of ones...
Quick question, how have the self appointed band cops worked out so far?
Answer: They just add to the general garbage on the band, now instead of a couple guys talking like fools, you got a third (or more) in there arguing with them giving them the attention they crave for which they always...
I have both the FT-8800 and the FT-8900 and love both radios. If in the future you do decide to get a handheld the crossband feature works great. The Ft-8900 gives you both both 10m and 6m. Personally I prefer the memory format in the Ft-8800 more than the ft-8900.
You can blame the testing, you can blame CB, you can blame anything you'd like. The real problem is the total lack of respect, civility and personal responsibility. These things can be seen in every facet of everyday life from the line in the grocery store, the shopping mall, and the behaviour...
If you're set on using your Garmin as the GPS or want to digipeat then you're talking the D-710 because it's the only one that can do both of those things.
Just off the top you're talking about commercially licensed repeaters so you'll need commercial radios to comply with your license, that rules out you using amateur radios on your repeater. You can go the other way round in the future, you can use commercial radios on the amateur bands as long...
The issue is the curve on the batteries and the amount of current drain when transmitting. The batteries have a pretty flat usage curve, and unlike cell phones that are using milliwatts you are using more power so the failure of the battery is more sudden. The voltage measurement is really the...
You can transmit into an appropriate dummy load to measure power, that's not an issue, and just because the meter can give you a reading for SWR while doing it doesn't make it (SWR) a valid measurement.
All the SWR tells you is that there is a difference between the impedance of the feedline and the antenna (or in this case the dummy load). Impedance in feedline and the dummy load can be different at different frequencies. Are you sure your dummy load is rated for UHF?
SWR is a measurement...
SWR has nothing to do with the radio and all to do with the feed line and the antenna. Checking the SWR into a dummy load tells you nothing about the radio.
Hook it to the antenna and then check the SWR.
Do you have a local club with someon e that could show you what to do?
