When the band is long, it's long.
I often have difficulty working Nevada , Idaho and Oregon, and Southern California is often a challenge as well.
I need "short skip" conditions to effectively work those places.
Phil in Nevada ( he's now over on the coast) was a rare contact for me, even when we...
I don't know, I have zero experience with these antennas, I know he was running one on his jeep, that was the one posted on YouTube.
This is work in progress, if I hear more I will update.

Just for information, here is John's latest DDRR like the one on his Jeep in his video.
This one is square, not round, he has said that it makes no difference between round and square.

This is one of many vertical transformer amps built that has a simple bias on the board that has been disabled.
If you look at the input you will see a choke from the top of the input transformer to ground, effectively killing the bias.
This was done because when building them they found that...
I used to live in the bottom of a little valley, It was a challenge to work over the hill to the west but not too bad to the east.
Sounds like a good idea, I hear a shot of good scotch helps warm the bones....

It's been good the last few days, 29.600 has been active on simplex and plenty of stations from 28.3-28.5
Actually this cycle has been a lot of fun, I have made more 12 m contacts from the mobile than I ever have before, I think the recent 10/12 meter rigs offered may have helped that segment...
So this popped up today in my email from my brother.
A single transistor amp with no transformers, tuned input/output.
Enlarge the image, note Telstar on the edge.

Is this the only radio that you have?
So you might be able to "touch up"
Modulation a little, I don't think you're going to be able to make a drastic improvement but here you go( found on the web)
I don't recommend removing/ clipping modulation components, Adjust them.
Go slow, take your time...
It's not likely that there's a specific Schematic on that amp, I assume it's like the solid state 677 Golden eagle amp that has a variable.
Can you find a part number on the old variable?
Any ohm's reading at all or is it open?

One of the first radios I ran on 10 meters was a 148 bodged up to 28 MHz.
Lou Franklin had plenty of info about ten meter conversion back then.

AM junkies don't want bias, it gobbles up current that they consider a waste, I too went through this phase many years ago.
" Class C works fine for SSB"
As I actually began to understand how radio really works, my views changed.
A lot.
Carl has been using the HG transistors for a while now...
