Icom 718- ALC modification for AM possible?

Before doing any hasty mods, try turning on your mic compressor feature. Normally this is to boost SSB audio but I also use it on my ICOM 706 for AM. (The 718 should also have this feature).

    1st Base

Trial and Error… that is how I learned what works best for my station. The smallest I would go with (stock radio) is a 4 amp supply. I prefer a 10-12 AMP for a SSB radio. Reason being for multiple radios, or future radio and station upgrades. IMAX 2000, AstroPlane, or a dipole are my...

    What is a superwhack pack??

Remember Switchkit in my area CB is a rarity. I have monitored/listened on 11 meters for about 2 years and I can only find about 8 folks in a 20 mile radius that chat on the standard 40 channels. We have one CB shop that I would consider sending my radios to and one other CB shop that is OK...

    Push up poles?

Picked up the Rohn H40 at R&L Electronics last Saturday. I don't see the justification of the $180 shipping. The antenna was long, but I could fit it inside my SUV with no problems. The construction was more sturdy than I had imagined. Too bad we had all the snow over the weekend... This...

    Dipole question/opinions

I have had good results running a dipole flat-top configuration. I don't typically run on 160 meters (only in the winter). I had to use the shortened dipoles since my yard is only 50ft long.

    What is a superwhack pack??

This is a rhetorical question you know... Technician: Someone whose occupation involves training in a specific technical process. or defined as: Someone known for high skill in some intellectual or artistic technique. So, used in a loose manner it would entail someone trained...

    Newbie needs help with antenna

I would go with the Wilson 1000. Mag mounts have the ability lose their grounding property (at higher speeds/wind resistance) if the mag mount is too small for the antenna. I have ran into this problem before but not with a Wilson 1000 Mag mount. (something to consider on taller antennas with...
